In the 21st century, the United States unveiled a military defense system that completely changed global politics. Through a series of satellites and powerful lasers, the U.S. gained a flawless defense against intercontinental missile attacks. The rest of the world feared that this defensive network might be used to launch an attack, and they united to demand that the U.S. dismantle it. A lengthy diplomatic stalemate gripped the globe. With the world at a crossroads, coalitions of nations were formed unlike any that had ever existed before. A plan was devised to destroy this perceived technological threat through military action. It involved attacking from three directions at once, for the nations of the world knew that every army dreads fighting a war on two fronts... and America was about to face three!

Fortress America, a board game of strategy and survival, imagines a not-too-distant future in which war has once again encircled the globe. This updated version of the 1986 classic features beautifully crafted components (including over 300 detailed plastic figures), thrusting players into a frightening geopolitical scenario. Take on either the role of the United States, struggling to protect itself from foreign threats, or one or more of the invading armies, fighting battle after battle to acquire important territories.

I think I speak for all of us when I say, "Oh yeah, this."

  • avatarMichael Barnes

I think I speak for at least some of us when I say "Eh, I don't really feel like spending $80 on this."

  • avatarSuperflyTNT

I think I speak for me when I say, "Been there, done that, and I can get the MB original version back for 40$"

  • avatarThirstyMan

And I think I speak for those of us here who haven't got this and would like to have it.

Fuck you elitist assholes I'll have a spanking new Fortress America, thank you very much, and I don't really give a toss about 80$ as long as the components are sound.

Note to contributers. You know we haven't ALL had the spare time and cash to play this when it was available. Some of us were going through a couple of divorces and having their game collections burned in front of their very eyes.

Man, that sounds like it would suck.

My god...did we just get a insight into Andy's origin story?

And I sincerely hope you enjoy it. I'm just saying that I completely forgot this was a thing.

Or at least his secondary mutation.

Not if he used to be a Eurogamer...

I'm waiting for Fortress Canadia. It's only 40$ and the situation isn't nearly as dire, it comes with 20 wooden beavers and a moose plus the map is way bigger.

Hard to tell if that was his origin story or merely insight into why he was exiled to TKWHL...

Not my house as well. You do trump me on that one.

I did lose two houses but they were still standing just my ownership was lacking.

Moral of the story...try to avoid divorce. Not, however, the reason why I am in TKWIL but good try though.

    WOLVERINES !!

  • avatarSuperflyTNT

The artist formerly known as Andy is in TKWIL because he is fleeing prosecution from the beating death of the second ex-wife. TKWIL has no extradition treaty with the UK or US.

    News at 11.

  • avatarSagrilarus

Trashy yes, but was the game any good? I've never seen this one in real life. And is the reprint more or less the same game?

    S.

  • avatarThirstyMan

Both of them are still alive, one in England and the other in China.

  • avatarmoofrank  - Trashfest

I didn't have one, and so I'll pay the $55 or so. In fact, it will be here for Trashfest alongside Infiltration, Nazgul, and something else that looked cool.

  • avatarDair

I have and enjoy the original. Glad to see it is back in print, as it should make it easier to find players.

  • avatarInfinityMax

The original is a classic DOAM game. Crazy fun. I'll probably pick up the new one. FFG has done a pretty good job with reprints lately - Nexus Ops and Wiz War are faithful to the original, so I don't have any reason to believe this will be lame.

  • avatarMichael Barnes

and something else that looked cool.

When Frank says this, be afraid. This means it will either be horrifically unplayable or it'll be the best unattainable game you've ever played.

As for whether or not Fortress America is any good...it was awesome in '86. I really don't think I would play it over any of the more recent DoaM games though. The concept is still cool, but I expect it to be one of those "yeah, not so much anymore" ones.

  • avatarDogmatix

I may pick it up just for the "check it out" factor. Problem is that I suspect it's just different enough that it wouldn't be a straight replacement for my bashed "Saddam Box". Dunno...

  • avatarldsdbomber

And I'd like to speak for those if us who've never seen or heard about this game except seen pics that make it look like a risk clone for rednecks. So, what is so good about this?

  • avatarSuperflyTNT

It's a very unique DOAM. It's not a "Risk Clone" by any standard. It's 3 vs 1, where the 1 just needs to survive, whereas the 3 work together to control 18 (IIRC) major cities. 3 doesn't get reinforcements, at all, whereas the 1 gets reinforcements AND has a very specific ability to drop laserbeams of doom down upon any baddie they choose.

It really is "Red Dawn: The Boardgame" in a lot of ways, and it actually makes me like Canadians quite a bit.

  • avatarMsample

I still play FA once or twice a year as a two player game. Is it still cutting edge? No, of course not. But it is still classic AT, and a hell of a lot simpler than some of the overwrought coffin box stuff coming out these days. And it holds up a lot better than say Shogun. With the long delayed remake of Red Dawn coming out later this year, maybe FFG saw an opportunity for a tie in or something. From the early reviews, doesn't sound like I'll need to replace my Saddam copy, or wait til it ends up on Tanga or an FFG Black Friday closeout .
