”Misdirection is the key to survival, never attack what your enemy defends, never behave as your enemy expects, and never reveal your true strength. If knowledge is power, then to be unknown is to be unconquerable.” The Romulan Empire expands its influence into Star Trek: Fleet Captains! This expansion set contains 12 new Romulan ships with 10 new sub-decks, and introduces a new Mission type (Espionage) and the ability to assign Romulan Saboteurs to your opponent’s ships.

    Well if it contains 12 ships, do you get to choose which three will be busted?

    So, um, I don't follow these announcements real closely, so sorry if this is a dumb question, but is this like the formal announcement from WizKids? I mean, did they call you up all like, "Uba, please announce our expansion for the F:ATties." Or is this a repost from somewhere else? Because I can't find this information on their site.

    @Drinkdrawers

    I get mass emails, so they don't say "Uba, please announce this to FATies." They usually say "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE" or are a list of games scheduled for release in the next few months.

    So what's better, this or the new FFG miniatures game?

  • avatarrepoman

    The Fleet Captains game did not impress me much. The mini's are frail and the rest of the components were very thin. The game itself was only so-so teetering on lame. A different set of ships probably isn't going to change that.

    The FFG X-wing game is super fun. One of the best, if not the best, new game I've played this year. The mini's are fabulous and prepainted. Just a fantastic game.

    I actaully was the recipient of Repo's generosity, or rather my 11 year old Spock superfan was, and we like it pretty well. The ships are indeed flimsy...Repo sent us the box and 3 ships were broken (presumably the 2nd time) and the card stock is indeed unforgivably thin, especially so since you have to flip cads over constantly which really puts jaggies on the tile faces.

    Gameplay is pretty good though. It almost feels like a submarine hunt game, the Feds are out trying to accomplish missions and hunt Klingons, who are mostly invisible for much of the game, complete with many, many 'fakes'. It's called Fleet Captains but really it's more like 'Patrol Commander' because most games have 2-3 ships per side.

    They did pretty good capturing the feel of Star Trek, and the game is more about exploration than killing shit, which amounts to doing a lot of "tests" which are done by dice rolls based on "Result+Base Stat+Skill Bonus+Extra Bonus". So, if I had to call a reason out that the game is kind of over-long, its because people think Star Trek and see Wrath of Khan, not USS Kelvin's 5 year science mission where no enemy contact is ever made.

    I'd totally have picked it up via trade for a pile of shelf toads or on discount, andnluckily I as broke as fuck at the time and Repo is just a great dude, so it cost me 0 and my kid got an awesome Birthday present from her perverted uncle of sorts. :)
