Arkham Horro DiceJust got a press release from House Petersen...they're entering into a partnership with Q-Workshop to release some special ARKHAM HORROR dice. They look pretty cool, black with green print, and featuring an art deco font, some filigree, and Elder Signs for the 5s and 6s. That's a cool touch. They should have had Montery Jack face-palming for the 1s. There are pictures, but I'm an idiot and can't get them small enough to post here. I'll try again in a little while.

They'll be available anywhere finer dice are sold.

What's next? ARKHAM HORROR miniatures?

Are the Cthulhu dice in question, these?: http://www.leisuregames.com/acatalog/Call_of_Cthulhu_Dice_Sets.html

In a side note, Launius is trying to finalize a deal with Peterson to release Arkham Horror the dice game. I haven't played it yet but locations pop up with different dice combos on them. Depending on the location, different awards (or penalties for failures) occur. You try to build up your dice pool to take on the great old one before the time runs out. I wathced half a game and it looked pretty fun.

No- but the dice do look very similar to those.

AH: THE DICE GAME...oh, that Richard Launius. I don't know about this one though...I'm sure it's a fun design, as are most of his, but it's one of those "do we really need this" things.

  • avatarubarose

Michael, I PMed you about the pics.

  • avatarAarontu

Will they also have "blessed dice" and "cursed dice", with Elder signs on just 6 or 4, 5, and 6, respectively? :p

  • avatarMattDP

What's the betting they'll be hard to find and exorbitantly expensive in the UK? I've got some mottled green chessex dice with gold spots to use for Arkham Horror. Usually I have some strange compulsion about using the dice that come with the game to play it, but for AH I made an exception. It seems to demand better dice, and not just because you really need more than they supply with the game.

Still, we want pictures, dammit, pictures!

  • avatarSouthernman

That's taken a long time to sort - I emailed them this time last year to ask about buying Cthulhu D6s hoping to maybe get some loose ones from the rpg multi sets and the reply was to wait as they were talking with FFG. Been so long a wait that I forgot all about it ....

  • avatarShellhead

Good point about being Cursed. If you can't see a difference between the 5 and the 6, those dice become useless to a Cursed investigator.

Those dice are very attractive, but I bet that they are annoying to actually read when you are playing the game. The yellow and black ones remind me of this Rubik's cube that I defiled by turning it into a cheap replica of a Hellraiser puzzle box.

Speaking of which, check out this awesome site:

They look pretty cool but I won't pay big bux for them. Also I have other specialty dice and it gets annoying reading the numbers after a while.

As for Launius' game, I'll wait to play it before I decide. Horror is not my favorite genre though I do like dice games. There are so many on the market now and yet only a few really are worth playing.

    lol @ face-palming 1's. Awesome

  • avatarPat II

I'm a sucker for this kind of thing, they'll probably carry them at hte Valet here in town.

Sweet! AH has grown and grown on me, like some Eldritch cancer, to the point that it's approaching current top game status. I'd certainly pick these up...

  • avatarMichael Barnes

    Shill!!!

Van, listen. I'm just saying these are the greatest dice ever made. If you buy these dice, you will roll fives and sixes. You might find yourself using the incredible ARKHAM HORROR dice in other games as well. It's dice like these that make me wish that I had a big black beard and blue shirt so that I could holler about how awesome these dice are. God bless mommy and daddy and Fantasy Flight Games.

Is that anything like Laura Roslin's space cancer?

  • avatarColumbob

They should just throw a few in every big box expansion. I won't be buying them, plenty of regular d6s around the house.

  • avatarPat II

The game really needs a box chock full of figs to sit on top of the counters.

  • Mr Skeletor

Fuck figs. What the hell is so interesting about investigator figs? Wow, its a man, and thats a girl! I think she is a librarian because she is holding a library card.
These look cool. I wonder how many will be in a pack.

Wow! Damn. Now I really want them. Thanks Michael!

I remember seeing some Q-Worksop dice at a con and thought they had some cool designs. A little hard to read from a distance but neat anyway. Then I saw the price. 14.90 euros for a set of RPG dice? No thanks...

Well you've definitely conquered Britain :D

Fuck the investigators I'm talking about the fucking monsters. Don't tell me you'd prefer counters over the figs in Starcraft or Space Hulk too now.

I don't want to hear any talk about the game being great as it is either - I get that. AT games are better with plastic pieces period.

  • Mr Skeletor

Starcraft and space hulk figs don't have stats on them. Arkhams do.

  • avatarPat II

I don't know of many figs that have stats on them...doesn't render them any less functional?

  • avatarubarose

I have a friend adapted the Bag of Cthulhu figs into chit holders. It's pretty sweet. Plus, you can just put out a number of little Cthulhus equal to your monster limit, and you know you have reached the limit when they run out.

  • avatarAntimatter

Figures could never altogether replace counters in AH because of the monster cup. Sure, you could draw counters and keep them handy for reference while substituting plastic figures on the actual board, but that would be way too much work for me. I would never use them for that reason -- no matter how cool they looked.

  • avatarPat II

That statement somehow contravenes the AT cannon.

  • avatarGrudunza

Yeah, I'll probably get these and pay way too much for two sets of them (they come in packs of 5).

I was joking with Mads recently when we were discussing our dice game designs about trying to create Arkham Horror: The Dice Game, thinking it would be ridiculously difficult to encapsulate all of what AH is into a simple dice game system. I thought you were joking, too, at first, Steve. Eh, it shouldn't surprise me, though, and if anyone can do it right, it should be Richard Launius. Again, I'll probably buy it.

  • Mr Skeletor

The other problem is how do you represent lovecraftian beasts in figure form?

  • avatarPat II

With the same challenges as presented to 2d artists. You really need a good shot of ayahuasca to get HP's vision - if that.

  • avatarmads b.

    @ Grudunza
Didn't realize you were joking. I'm gonna give it a try, but it's gonna be something like my zombie game (though more complicated and longer, I think) and not a "proper" dice game with mulitple players and all.

And if they publish it I'm probably gonna buy it too. I love ARKHAM and would really love a shorter game that could scratch just at bit of the same itch.

  • avatarGrudunza

Ah yeah, well I was at least half-joking... I thought it might be an interesting challenge to try to do that, but also preposterously hard to boil AH down to a dice game while still keeping the flavor it intact. But apparently he's done it, and I'd certainly love to try your version if you can figure something out.

  • avatarSleightOfHand12

Difficult to boil AH down to a dice game? Worried about flavor? Here's my interpretation:

Roll all the dice in the game; sum the results. You lose that much sanity.

  • avatarubarose

    Are these out yet?
