INCURSION in Review INCURSION in Review Hot

blitzhundNah, you guys probably wouldn't like Grindhouse Games' INCURSION. I mean, sure, it's got Nazi werwolves and all in it...but it doesn't come spilling over with plastic miniatures and fancy terrain pieces. And it has old-time cardboard stand-ups if you don't buy the miniatures. That means you might have to TURN THE PIECE to see the picture. What a hassle!

But I like INCURSION, and I like it a lot. I think it's a good value and it's a really fun game that totally holds its own againts SPACE HULK, its most direct comparision. It's streamlined, simple, and a lot of fun without any bloatation devices to inflate the game's depth or price.

Review is at Gameshark. Sometime in the next several weeks I'm going to do an interview with Jim Bailey, the head honcho over at Grindhouse Games. I hope they do more, I like the direction they're headed in.

If I didn't own Space Hulk and Tannhauser I would consider this. It does look awesome but I try not to have too many of the same game hanging around.... picking it up for a friend however.. who owns neither. That could work. Nice review and once again it is very cool of you to cover companies I never heard of before (did I send you a list of things I've never heard of??).

The cardboard is fine for me, and I'm a huge defender of over-production, but I own and enjoy both types of games. Production is a big plus... but I only need so many overproduced games in my closet.

    Nazi werewolves!?! Gotta read.

  • avatarjay718

I've been eyeing this one for a while now, and was actually thinking about posting here to get y'alls opinion. Looks like it could be a lot of fun. Tannhauser interested me too, but the reviews ultimately steered me away. So far I don't think I've seen anyone with bad things to say about Incursion. You called Tannhauser 'timid.' Is that in light of gameplay, an overall feel, or just in comparison to Incursion? Either way, this just moved up on my list.An 8 page rulebook sounds pretty nice too. Makes it much easier to get to the table.

Ah, now I remember reading about this game a while back. Thanks for bringing it back to the forefront of my mind. Glad it got a good review, sounds like some good fun.

  • avatarjay718

Also gotta say, I love it when buying miniatures or deluxe components is optional. If you enjoy the game as is out of the box, well that's just great. Wanna spice it up with some tiny little dudes? We can do that too.

  • avatarAncient_of_MuMu

The problem with this game is that Space Hulk came out before it, and as you say there isn't much reason to own both.

  • avatarUniversalHead

First I must declare my bias, as I did the reference sheet for Incursion. But I think there's too much emphasis on the similarities with Space Hulk. While they share some mechanics like the action point system, they feel very different in play - there's not the tension and relentlessness of Space Hulk, but there is more interesting and fun combat and more variety. I happily own both games and see them as very different game experiences.

  • avatarJonJacob

That's good news. It does look very cool and being compared with SH is basically a compliment. Not many games are good enough to get that.

  • avatarmoofrank

You didn't quite mention the look of the game--which I adore. Everything is just gorgeous.

It is the kind of quality in minis and design that Rackham made. But with games you acn actually play.

  • avatarDeath and Taxis

The metal minis and resin terrain features would be too tempting for me, so I would be afraid to get too close to this game. But it really does look great. I love the theme and Tannhauser has appealed to me because of the similar theme. I have been waiting to see where Tannhauser was going before looking to buy into it. This might be a better alternative.

I own both Space Hulk (versions 1,2, and 3) and Incursion. I have gotten much more pleasure out of Incursion. But I am a Zombie and WW2 fan. How could Incursion go wrong?! Needless to say, it didn't!
I have the game and all the minis (except for the very latest ones), and really think this game is superior in some ways to Space Hulk. Not many, but enough to suggest to those people who already own Space Hulk to go ahead and buy Incursion. It Rules!

Man alive. Jim Baily is one of the nicest gamers I've met. I think I mentioned it before, but he and his brother John organize _a_lot_ of the gaming in the San Antonio area. They had been working on Incursion for a good while before Space Hulk 3rd was announced. Naturally, SH stole a lot of what would've been Incursion's thunder.

When I think of the glory days of GW, I think about the old guard hanging out in a small smokey room, drinking beer and listening to Bolt Thrower albums. The Baileys roll like that. Always have a beer on hand for you and a love for playing games.

Thanks for raising the profile of this game and look forward to the interview.

I love SH. Depending on the day you catch me on, it's my favorite game. I own the 3rd edition and a homemade 1st edition, but I've got one huge problem with it. I DON'T OWN A TABLE THAT IT FITS ON. Seriously, it's kind of a deal breaker. I don't play nearly enough SH because of it. For that reason alone, I may be sold on this one.

  • avatarJosh Look

BTW Barnes, is the Horus Heresey review coming up? I'm interested to know what you think of it, since your opinion tends to be as honest and unclouded as it gets. I knew you were on the fence a few weeks ago, just wondering if you've taken a more solid opinion on it. I don't want to spend the money on it, but I can get it for somewhat cheap (comparatively).

  • avatarMichael Barnes

Eh, it's coming...I'd just rather cover a smaller game that I'm excited about instead of big, high-profile one that is barely mediocre. It's tough to write reviews of games that aren't all that great. It's a long process, it takes a couple of hours. But something like this review,I think I wrote it in 30 minutes because I was excited about it and about presenting it to a bigger audience.

INCURSION is vastly superior to TANNHAUSER. The LOS system in TANNHAUSER is cool, but there's so much clutter and the fake Nazi thing is silly. I haven't seen the new rulebook though.

  • avatarHatchling

Thanks for the review Michael. I see the game plays with up to 4 people. How well does it scale?

  • avatarSan Il Defanso

Well, that looks really cool. Unfortunately I just plunked down the money for a used copy of Space Hulk, so it looks like Incursion is out of luck. It looks sweet though.

  • avatarShellhead

This looks very good. They practically had me just with the word grindhouse, but those maps look fantastic and the theme and gameplay seem to be right down my dark alley. Character card looked a little disappointing but I like that they didn't go expensive on the components.

  • avatarMichael Barnes

Scaling...I've only played with two (and a couple of solo games, which were really fun actually) but it shouldn't be too hard to do teams or some kind of deathmatch if you wanted to. It's loose enough that you can really do whatever you want with it.

The look of the game is great- it reminds me of Michael Oeming's comics art. Very stylish and modern.

I think you could make a good argument for owning this alongside SPACE HULK...I don't intend to get rid of my copy, so that should tell you something.

Note- Jim Bailey told me that they were down to 30 copies out of 1000 copy first printing...but it's been picked up by Alliance and should be in wider circulation soon. Support these guys, they deserve it.

  • avatarninthdoc

I have this game, but I've not gotten to play it yet. I've been picking up the Secrets of the Third Reich minis that this game came from as well. I really like a lot of the minis in the line.

  • avatarShapeshifter

Having worked on the project I'm kinda biased but that said, I prefer this over Space Hulk because it adds more detail without giving players more rules in return.
I feel there are slightly more choices/diversity/freedom in what you can do.
The cardplay offers some extra neat twists that are missing in SH.
Mind you, I like SH, but given the fact Incursion comes in very small box in comparisson I feel you get alot more game in relation to the volume. I'm kinda sick of having to carry large mammoth-size boxes to my gaming group and Incursion offers a compact game with alot of depth.
I whish more publishers would take this route.

  • avatarSouthernman

Having trouble spotting this in the UK - which means when it does show it will be expensive.

  • avatarSouthernman

Cheers Severian. Boardgamers have really dried up in our little club (the minis and rpgers have been rampant in numbers) with no gaming for 3 weeks now, so a decent 2 player game that doesn't play as long as WotR or ToI may be useful.

  • avatarcraniac

I don't get it--does the game come with cardboard standups or miniatures? How much does it cost?

  • avatarcraniac

Ok, it comes with cardboard, and the minis have a MSRP of $70 for 13 starter miniatures, or $55 at my FLGS. I may get it and just play it with the cardboard. It sounds more fun than Space Hulk--I also have the table problem and it hurts at my age to squat on the floor for hours (note to self: Never travel in Asia while on a low-fiber diet)
