Lavish is hardly appropriate.
Please enlighten us as to what is appropriate then. Mine has not shipped yet. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to hear non-GW employees describe the game.
I got to examine a copy in detail this past Saturday, with the pieces still on the sprues. The pieces are solid as a rock -- no complaints whatsoever. The plastic has a hardness to it, and appears (from what I saw of some pieces in-process) to take primer and paint very well.
One of the things the guy showing me pointed out is that the cardboard pieces, the hallways and doors and rooms and the like, are not only beautiful to the eye but actually have the detail embossed into them -- the image on the floor is also pressed into the surface of the cardboard giving a change in the reflection off the gloss and a feel to the touch.
Sag.
Holy Moly -- just got mine too. The production is ridiculous, or an AT fashion -- ricockulous. I never had the original, so I am quite excited to get this to the table.
And of course, the minis join the queue of those that I need to paint, but I will wait until those are the only ones left as I want to do them justice and hopefully my abilities will be improved by then.
This game is really pissing some people off. Everyone wants so badly to hate on GW that this exceptionally bright ray of sunshine just doesn't compute with them.
Short of some tragic flaw in the package (rules crisis or broken pieces) this thing is an in-the-park home run.
Sag.
The next person to talk about SPACE HULK is getting banned. I feel like an idiot for not ordering it, and you must suffer my foolishness by refraining from all discussion about the game.
Maybe if I don't spend any money at Dragon Con and there's some left...
How's that(vegetarian)crow pie tasting Mr. Barnes? Wanna glass of "Loser" juice to wash it down with?
Mine says "dispatched" I have a shipping id but no box of Space Hulk yet ~~~O_O~~~
BTW - did y'all see this storage option yet??

The thing that has kept me on the fence with this edition is that I have already spent about $300 pimping out my 1st edition that I just this year (along with both expansions). I bought all new termies for it. I actually dont't really like the new Genestealer models too much (a moving Genestealer hanging onto a wall piece seems strange). The embossed floor tiles, with updated design are the one thing that has kept me interested in maybe picking up the new edition.
At least I have a copy to play though.
LA
Van -- thanks for the heads up on the storage, that looks quite convenient.
And Michael, you should be deeply regretful that you didn't preorder this. I have to say that I would be hard pressed to name a game that has equivalent production values as this. $100 is steep, but I have to say that it is completely justified in this case.

SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP, OK?
I have just secured my pre-order! Nearly left it too late. FLGS had 15 copies - all gone now. Luckily the local GW outlet had 2 copies left for pre-order. Sigh.
I'd feel like a real dunce for missing this!
If only I could figure out what "Dispatched" means when I check the status of the copy I ordered from the GW website...
Kingdaddy, click on your order detail to get to the Order Detail page.
You may see Order Number, Order Date, and Order Tracking number.
If you see an Order Tracking number, this is your Federal Express tracking number. Copy this and go to the Federal Express tracking page and drop it in and see where the package is at.
Space Hulk. Space Hulk. Space Hulk.
Wanna play Thursday if I can get the minis at least assembled. It is a nice edition. The pieces are gorgeous, with practically each one being unique. The sculpts are AMAZING. Slightly overly perfect, as they look more CAD sculpted, but the poses and extra terrain bits on the Genestealers are just amazing.
The only downside is while the game has a nearly perfect selection of rules and pieces from the base game and first two expansions, it only has 12 missions. I wonder if they are going to do at least a PDF print of the Mission Book.
Got my copy today. Didn't get to do anything other than take the shrink off the box and stare, jaw agape at the components. It's amazing.
Fun fact: you can take a UPS, FedEx or USPS tracking number, drop it directly into google, and track your package.
In the current issue of White Dwarf (#356), GW says
GW also says
Has everyone whose got a copy got it through the post? I got mine sent to my local store. If I go down there do you think I will be able to pick it up.

SHUT UP! JUST SHUT UP, OK?
At least you've got Agricola and Dominion to keep you busy while they waste their time assembling and painting all those minis before they can play ;-)
I preordered mine only last week, and there is absolutely no activity. At all. If I go to the GW website it only says: "Order being processed". :/
So what's the price for this thing outside the US? I always see prices for little games like Fjords going for $35 in Australia or Italy. Is Space Hulk's price lifting in a similar way? Given it's starting point it could be a pretty salty purchase.
Sag.
Mine is on the truck to be delivered today. I was unable to buy sprue cutters last night, how badly do I need those for this?
Sag,
the game goes for 78 € (which equals 111 $)in Europe (or at least in Belgium). No shipping costs.
It's retailing for between NZ$180 and $190 (US$121 - 128).
Unfortunately, the store selling them for $180 was sold out before I placed my preorder, so I had to pay $190 for mine. Oh well, it's the shizzle.

I just got done looking through mine. Um, Michael. Stop reading now please.
Really.
Stop.
It is jaw dropping. Absolutely amazing. Re: sprue cutters, I'd say they would be a very worthwhile investment. Dunno if you have a Hobby Lobby in your neck of the woods MD but they carry some, and you can almost always go their website and download a 40% off coupon. I shall be hitting a store tomorrow. One of the things I've read is that some people have accidently clipped things that looked like sprues but weren't - so be careful. On my first look see, it was not entirely clear what folks have been talking about.
Even unpainted the figures are awesome. As part of the build up to this moment, I've been painting my partial 1st ed. figures. I think these models are much nicer, and the different, unique poses are fantastic. What a nice touch. Really adds a nice element to the atmosphere. As everyone has been saying, the tiles are THICK. I haven't taken them out of the shrink yet. I'm savoring the experience :)
My box was a tad beat up on the inside, presumably from the models bouncing around, but I don't see any whine worhthy issues - some nicks and such on the inside of the box lid. One of the floor tiles looked like it had gotten a bit of a nick as well, but again, no biggie.
Ok, I'm off to de-shrink wrap and read the rules. I can honestly say, I have not been this excited by a new game in, well, a really, really long time.
Cheers,
Brother Van, Bvt. Major General of the Michigan Chapter, Space Marines.
Ok, nearly punched, not despured yet. Even the dice are fancy! Sort of a "cookies 'n cream" color!
One more minorish glitch. I am missing a door. Odd thing, that. I've double checked to make sure it didn't fall out (honestly, don't know how it could, the tiles are so thick) But on the board with the doors, I am missing one and according to the inventory I should have 20. So double check that. I am sure GW will fix me up, I'm not worried at all about it, this is just a little fyi. I'll snap a pick for reference once I get a battery charged.
Pics here for the curious:
The tile in question is "Sheet 6 Reverse/Front of 12 99330699001"

Not a huge deal. I've sent GW a note and I'll bet they'll fix me right as rain.
I called GW. They told me that it will be in store on saturday, which is the stated UK release date.
I got my copy yesterday and it is as nice as they say. I've not painted in years but this might be the excuse I need to break out the brushes again.
I'm a little concerned about the rules. I'm only familiar with 1st edition but several changes that benefit the marines.
1) You can redraw your command points as long as your Sgt is alive.
2) You keep your Command Point total hidden from the Stealer Player.
3) Termies don't lose overwatch if they jam
4) Sustained fire bonus on overwatch (although this is countered in that sustained fire never gives more than a +1)
5) If your Sgt dies, you no longer get a 30 sec time penalty. Imagine this is due to practical reasons, sand timer is not adjustable.
6) New "guard" order. Like overwatch but instead of shooting, it allows your term to reroll a close combat die if they happen to get cc'ed that turn.
I didn't notice anything changed that would help the stealers....
But I'm still very happy. Thinking I should have gotten a second copy to tinker with, make blips 4-6, giant missions with 2 termie players, etc.
Anyone looking to play in ATL?
When you say you're missing a door, do you have the empty spot for it in the frame? Maybe they just made a mistake on the inventory list.

Just so. Yea it is really weird. In any case, I've sent a note to GW so I'm sure they will fix me up.
I hopped over to Hobby Lobby at lunch they had a sprue cutter for $14 and took my @ coupon with it. They also had some nice brushes at 40% off as well, so I picked up a couple.
Wahoo!
Mine also said "Dispatched", but no package id number.
Mine was that way until the day it arrived on my door step. So no worries :)

Seems like you'd be able to combine 1st edition bits for that, no? I have a mostly sort of complete but not really, 1st edition set.

I started desprucing my models this evening. I'd say they are quite necessary. I can see myself (short temper, short amount of patience) being very frustrated very quicly had I not picked up my cutters this afternoon at lunch. Mine were Excel brand $12.99 at hobby lobby + @ off coupon = $5.20 according to the receipt.
The other thing that looks like you'll want to have is a nice file. I picked up a nice set at Home Depot "Nicholson 5 1/2" Hobby File set for $16.95. I would think a nail file might work OK as well, but, well, you see I have this OCD thing and wanted the proper tool for the job.
I mentioned earlier I wasn't sure what people where talking about accidentally cutting pieces that looked like sprues but were not, I believe they must be referring to the pegs on the back side of the model pieces that snap into the other half of the model. I can see that being a tad confusing.
Happy Hulking!
Van
I didn't notice anything changed that would help the stealers....
Broodlord? Hard to Kill. Mighty Blow.
what about line of sight? it's now 90 instead of 180 degrees. that's a significant change foe the marines
I did end up getting sprue cutters from a local store. I'm still traumatized from taking out all those pointy little ships in Twilight Imperium 2nd Edition so sprue cutters are now a must. Unfortunately I put the wrong arm onto one of the marines last night so now I have to get some glue.
I noticed a number yesterday afternoon, but didn't remember that GW sends through UPS the brown shirts, and the tracking number didn't work at Canada Post. It did arrive yesterday though, so it's all good.
I think that was already the case in 2nd ed.
IIRC mine had the same thing, which seemed odd to me. I cut out all the models, put together the termies and filed the flashing off them and an doors. I'll have to double check tomorrow when I get to the genestealers, but I do recall, thinking it odd.
I performed some "plastic surgery" last night and it worked out so well I'm considering breaking another marine's arm off just so I can reset it to a better fit.
Those are the twins, Giuseppe and Salvatore. Even their mother can't tell them apart.
The local FLGS released their Space Hulks today but they were all pre-orders; they did not order any copies for store sales.
As to the Genestealer sprues, there are 13 poses with 9 of them duplicated.
Should I paint the twins different so I can tell them apart? How will that affect game play?
I had a little arm boo boo as well, ended up gluing two arms. I'm thinking of sending myself a strongly worded email to let myself know how mad I am.
Salvatore likes to wear earth tones. Giuseppe prefers basic black, with a swatch of bold color, such as a bright orange ascot.
Usually when you ask someone to "post a few pics of the twins", it is in an entirely different context.
Will do! I'll expose the twins as soon as I am able to do so!
So, I PLAYED IT! Tonight. I popped my Hulk cherry. (yes I am full aware how that sounds particularly vis a vis the twins. I stand by my statement.
Oh my, I so grok what I've read about now. The tension. The timer pressure. I so see it now. Just ran through the Suicide Mission with Cold_fuzion. There was a bit of rule book flipping, not too bad at all. I thought the suicide mission was going to be easy. Then I realized, the termies are a bit unwieldly, the blips popping up all over the place. And whap-pow! Doubles on overwatch. Jam. uh oh.
Love it! I am so happy I bought this game. Despite the cost, it is absolutely worth it! I can't wait to get some more plays under my belt and fleshing out all the little bits and pieces of rules.
I am really tempted to buy this, but
1) Cost
2) Paying more money for sprue cutters, brushes and paints
3) Painting all the figs
4) I'll never play it at home. The wife doesn't believe in 2-3 hour gaming sessions.
5) I'll never play it with my group. They are primarily Caylusians. Good peopel, but this isn't their game. There are a few Descent fans. Also, it is hard to get away to play with the group. The wife doesn't believe in the indulgence of a five hour game night for myself
6) Endless debates about which ruleset is best have already begun. I really like a fixed ruleset without a lot of debate, that nagging feeling that there is no best answer. People might argue over Steam vs. Age of Steam, but each respective game has a fixed ruleset.
Most of these are problems with my gaming availability, not the game. Our FLGS has a few copies left, and I'm tempted to buy one just to flip for $150 in a few weeks, but past attempts at exploiting the greed of others have failed miserably.
All of this is a bummer, because I really want to play the game after reading these comments, but would probably get more mileage out of a Crokinole board.
Craniac,
1) Yep it isn't cheap. It could have been with crappy components, but GW decided to give this the premium treatment.
2) I have had first edition forever and have played many a game without painting the figs. It would look so purty painted. Some sort of sprue cutter is a must, however, I agree.
3) See my comment to 2
4) Space Hulk sessions shouldn't take anywhere close to 2-3 hours with a two person scenario. Should be much closer to 60 mins. The timer helps move this game along for the AP prone. :)
5) Descent fans should like this quite a bit. It's a tactical game like Descent and you only need one other to play. The Calyusians... well... they are lost anyway. ;)
6) No endless debates really, play either using the first edition or third edition, they are both great rulesets.
I can see it as a tough choice though with the initial price barrier to entry. For me, it was a no brainer, but I know I'll get plenty of plays in over the years and I only need to find one other person that wants to play to make that happen.
Ok, now I want to sell a few games I'm not playing and scrape up the $80 to buy this at my FLGS. You are killing me. Hopefully, if I don't end up playing it for whatever reasons, I can resell it for what I paid, which seems likely.
What is the price in the US 'cos it's just under £60 in the UK, which at the current exchange rate is $100. If you guys are getting it for $80 then good ols rip-off Britain strikes again - especially when US games do not reduce by teh exchange rate when they arrive here !
MSRP is $99.99 in the US. I could get it from my FLGS for 10% off. My FLGS was already sold out of half of his stock yesterday morning and that is when he put it on the shelves.
What's all the talk of getting specialized sprue cutters? Wouldn't normal wire cutters work?
Crainiac: I've been wanting to get this too, but keep debating on whether to believe the hype or not if it's going to sell out.
I've actually been noticing that our local gaming club has been talking more about AT games (Middle-Earth Quest, Battlestar Galactica, Tales of the Arabian Nights) lately than they have Euros. I rarely make it out to the gaming nights too.
Metalface... Wire cutters worked for me. The more specialized sprue cutters are nice to have but not essential.
Someone just linked me to this... very cool for atmosphere if you have a laptop nearby while playing.
http://www.beastsofwar.com/dsac/dsacdownload.html
Metalface: Our local store, BGR, has no more online copies and onlty two copies on shelf as of yesterday. Of course, Games Workshop may have another 5,000 that they'll release in a month or two.
Hehe... After spending much of the night cutting and cleaning the minis, it felt so much like work than I kept thinking: Wow, some one could probably make some money by buying a bunch of copies and selling them after doing all this work :D
But the game is worth it :D
Craniac: Yeah, I saw they sold out online already. GW has said they have shipped all theirs out haven't they?
On That Other Site someone said that GW is asking stores to return their unsold stock to help meet unexpected demand in the UK.
Metalface: Sprue cutters have a thinner head so you can usually get a bit closer to the model and it doesn't leave as much to trim off - in addition the cutting edge is right on the edge compared to wire cutters which are usually recessed back a bit again allowing you to cut closer the model. Also the thin head doesn't put as much pressure on the plastic, especially on thinner/more fragile parts.
But all that said, I used wire cutters on mine just fine.
Pre-orders having been shipping since last week; mine was delivered last Friday. Lavish is hardly appropriate.
