I figure you're right on the 5 books. Disappointing there doesn't seem to be a free option for the "warscrolls" but if the app has a $1.50/month subscription like the list building app for AoS, then I can't complain too much. Either way, the most expensive grand alliance book is Order at $35 so it shouldn't bee too much to get my hands on something day one.

First glance at stat lines. Not as drastic a change to match AoS as I believed there would be.
Added movement to replace Initiative (chargers always strike first now). WS and BS are now straight 3+ or 4+ or whatever. BS was always sort of like that but seems no more chart comparing WS. S and T still around so guessing that chart will remain in some form.

I could have swore I saw something on the new site mentioning freely available data slates for each unit.

So here is how weapons work in 8th ed:
www.warhammer-community.com/2017/04/26/warhammer-40000-weapons/
So it is now confirmed that templates are gone.
The new system is 'better' at first blush, but it's not giving me much hope that it will make the game go by as quickly as they hoped.
Simply rolling a d6 for amount of figs hit by a flames is better than twaddling around with a template, but it's uncertain who chooses which models are affected. I assume the owner of the models, since that seems to be how casualties were historically removed.

The latest rule is the nearest models. Not sure how casualty will be determined in the new one. I like the owner of the model because it's clean and fast.

Alright, so with the morale phase being covered in today's Warhammer Community post, we now have a preview of all phases of the game. Seems like psykers (magic), movement, shooting, charging, close combat and morale are mostly the same as in Age of Sigmar.
The two key things differences I see now are the To Wound roll and initiative in close combat. Instead of a static To Hit and To Wound roll as in AoS, they have instead split the difference and have a static To Hit roll like Aos and a To Wound roll obtained by consulting a Strength and Toughness chart like in every Warhammer I've ever played. Close combat initiative is also slightly modified where now units that charged that turn always strike first, THEN starting with the active player you alternate choosing units to attack, like AoS is currently.
Overall, it seems like AoS 1.5, which as a fan is certainly exciting to me. Now to just see how these 5 books at launch work out with how much money I'm being asked to spend to get the rules for the armies I have. I'm hoping the app isn't too far off and will provide a free/cheaper means to get my hands on these. I have a few friends with some old 40k models kicking around their basement/garage that will be turned off by the prospect of paying $50 just to see if they like it.

It looks great and I think they are making the right choices across the board. Not quite sure why they are staying with the old S vs T table...but it's fine.
Doing vehicles like AOS monsters is a stroke of genius. So many doofy rules are gone because of that.
I'm actually really looking forward to the tallboy SMS. They really did need to scale up the signature unit.
I'm definitely in for the starter and books- never been all that into Nurgle but he new models look awesome.
