What's interesting is that stock prices for Hasbro and uh some other major toy manufacturer, not Lego, went UP yesterday. So the market doesn't seem to think that "kids don't want toys" is the problem.

Capitalism is going to fail due to automation. The lure of automated efficiency will cause greedy investors to gradually discard most of their labor force, aka everybody's customers. Without an adequate customer base, companies won't be able to sell their products. An increasingly small upper class won't offer enough demand.

I'm not sure it's that capitalism will fail, but that it will likely have continued unwavering support when it may no longer be the right tool for the job as it were.

But, yeah, seems we're headed for a problem.

EDIT: you're right. I basically just reworded your statement. Sorry.

Toys R Us was my go-to Nintendo shop for generations. I bought my NES, N64 and Gamecube there. Plus piles of games.
But, I also hate the experience of shopping there now when I'm buying gifts, so I'll look at it as wistful nostalgia rather than an actual loss for my consumerism.

My most interesting Toys r us story is 18? Or so years ago my wife and I went to one in Costa Mesa SoCal to get gift for nephew. It was early like 10am and there is a line of about 50 people waiting outside. The store is open and we walk in. The manager comes up and frantically asks my wife if she had time and will she volunteer to fill in for Barbie. They were having a released of some new product and had posters for Personal Appearance Barbie to sign. Apparently Barbie partied hard on Friday night, was too hungover and no showed the gig. My wife was quite flattered that they asked but wasn't sure if she really wanted to do it. I said it will always make a great story, so she agreed to do it. She is certainly beautiful enough but not blonde. They gave her a Barbie dress and sash to wear.

In SoCal there were plenty of Latina girls in line and they used cognitive dissonance to see a brunette woman as Theresa, Barbie's Latina friend. We didn't know the Barbie lore about that, but it all worked out. My wife signed posters for an hour and a half or so and made chit chat with all the girls asking them about school and whatnot. The manager was so happy. We left with the Barbie Sash as souvenir and some merch. I think I got a heroscape master set and some photos for my troubles. Damn, if only we could have kept that dress....

Sigh. You whipper snappers...
THIS old man remembers getting his dear old ma to purchase SPY HUNTER for the COLECOVISION. Where? Toysrus, Milcreek Mall, Erie Pennsylvania.
Also, more Masters of the Universe than you can imagine. Long live Man-E-Faces.

I'm really glad I have no nostalgia revolving around a retail chain store. I guess growing up poor had its benefits after all.

Ah the Colecovision. I had one of those as well as Intellevision. All of these things, as well as all of my He-Man figurines and Castle Grayskull, were all purchased at department stores. My first trip to Toys R Us was when I was 15 and by then all of my cash was being spent on games, RPGs and miniatures.

Good info but something about that guy's speaking cadence drove me up the wall. I had to speed it up to 1.25x
