Have any of our veteran RPers played using modern evolutions of on-line RPG boards and or systems like Roll20?

Over 10 years ago I ran a game on line using text and some very simplistic game/chat program whose name is lost in the fog of time. Today I was looking at the Roll20 program and it seems worlds more advanced than what I once used.

Anybody run a game using this method?

Anybody have a passing interest in playing in a game I would run using this system? I'm thinking Starfinder or D&D 5th.

I’ve played a few games via Roll20. It is okay but not as good as face to face. It’s harder to pick up on cues, so that leads to a lot of crosstalk.

It’s a good way to play with people you are geographically distant from. And it’s a good way to play games that your regular group isn’t into.

I ran a Pathfinder adventure on it. It works pretty well, and just like real life, it takes a lot of prep work on the part of the DM. I scheduled character creation sessions with each player individually to save time when it came to actual game time.

This is, I'd imagine, highly atypical, but my wife and I had the weird experience of using Roll20 for the first time while sitting around in a living room with a few other players, each with a device (tablet or laptop) and the DM and another player on the phone. Because they hadn't got voice chat worked out, we were sitting listening to echoes on an iPhone set to speaker for three or four hours. We only happened to be with some of the other players because we were visiting them in Indiana, as they are IRL friends of my wife. Once Jenn and I are at home, have headsets, and are set up on computers and not iPads (she was struggling trying to track everything with my pad), I think it'll be better. But even so I think it'll probably just ever be "OK." It might be the only way we could play regularly at this point, and certainly the only way with people two or more states away, but, truth be told, unless it gets better with experience and a better setup (and it might), I'm not sure how enthusiastic I am about replicating all the charm of a work conference call in my leisure time. But I'm also effing old and set in my ways.

Am I right in assuming this kind of set-up works better with narrative heavy games or is their solution for playing combat-focused fare with miniatures and counters and the like?

When I did it, it was using a grid-based map with monster "figures" and positioning and everything. It worked fine.
