There are "rares"? I didn't know that. GameStop just had them all when I bought...

Well, rare in the sense that some figs are short-packed in the retail boxes in comparison to others. This is a comment I saw at BGG when I was researching Power Pack availability:

Over on Reddit I have had a person confirm that a full box they saw at the Toronto EB Games had 16 packs and was exactly 3x Luigi, 3x Toad, 3x Fireball Mario, 2x Diddy Kong, 2x Boo, 1x Wario, 1x Rosalina, 1x Tanooki Mario. I have visited two other EB Games in Montreal and both of the opened boxes and their remaining contents were consistent with that distribution.

I was in a bit of a hurry so I didn't count each and every pack, but there were definitely more of some figs (Luigi, Boo) and only two of others (Rosalina, Tanooki Mario). FWIW, according to BGG comments most people were having problems getting the short-packed figs, and my two local Gamestops only had Luigi and Boo left.

I saw Downforce at Barnes and Noble yesterday for $40. I used to own Daytona 500 but had to leave it in Doha with a friend because of shipping space limits, so I replaced it with Detroit Cleveland Grand Prix, which Legomancer says has a pointless auction. My birthday is a few days away too, so it feels like a perfect storm, except that I'm not whipped into a frenzy about buying a game that I essentially already own, other than it sounds a little better and my family will play it.

The other option would be the Deluxe version of Citadels. We have been playing the basic version lately and enjoying it. 27 profiles--that's nuts.

Similar to how many people here are burning off games to buy more GW product, I seem to be doing the same so I can buy more D&D stuff. Yesterday I went out and picked up Volo's Guide To Monsters, since I'm starting up a new regular D&D group next week. It's a very fun book to read through, much more than the core books, even though it is clearly not as essential.

I ordered The Expanse Board Game Link to Expanse by Geoff Engelstein. I was going to wait for a couple of more reviews but I read the rules and it seemed a good game for my game group. Looks like an easier and shorter COIN game. I like COIN games but I don't own any because they're a pain in the ass to teach and they take too long for our Wednesday night game group. The rules seemed pretty easy and straight forward. I also like the idea of having multiple card up to pick up similar to Pax Porfiriana or Pax Pamir vs.only 1 card choice in normal COIN games.

Ordered the Cadassian and Ferengi expansions to Star Trek: Ascendancy. Here's to hoping the long wait was worth it.

Mine are on the way as well. I haven't played the game in 10 months because I wanted to wait for a higher player count. Then I kind of forgot about it.

I just got them in from GF9 yesterday. They look good. I _really_ like this thing they've added in the Cardassian one...you can pull an exploration card where you discover that another player is already there...maybe a scou ship or science mission, whatever. It instantly puts a ship from another player in the system. Will it lead to a diplomatic imbroglio? Open a nonaggression pact? Or will they ambush you? It's all up to how the two involved players handle it. Very Trek, and a really cool way to stir the pot, so to speak.

I got them in yesterday as well and agree, the new exploration cards and planets are almost more exciting than the factions.

I bought a copy of Quarriors that has all expansions and even a couple of the harder to find promos from a garage sale yesterday for $30. It was a hard decision, since my current situation dictates that spending money on games is foolish, but I wanted to see what the game played like with the new rules as well as access to all expansions.

I'm not a huge fan of the game even though Kevin Wilson turned me on to a few plays of it at FFG a few years ago. It just never stuck with me even though its novel. I hated the marketing of quarriors as a blind buy with super heroes pasted on to it. But I think the kids may enjoy it a bit. If not, I won't lose any money if I decide to sell it.

I went to a local convention because they organize a big charity sale every year and came back with two games: March of the Ants and Cosmic Encounter..

Prices were a bit higher than last year, but they were still super cheap. Typical eurogames for 20-25€, big 60€ titles at 35€ and so on. And there was a lot of good stuff. At first I thought that, being the second day and having at least 50 people in front, I would not be able to find anything good, but damn, I did! A quick search gave me a lot of options but settled on three games,

Cosmic Encounter + Cosmic Incursion (42€)
March of the Ants (35€)
German Railways (20€)

I thought that grabing three games would be greedy and I was getting Cosmic for sure, so I discarded German Railways. March of the Ants was a risk: It's a game I'm buying untested and one I know is not a 10 out of 10 or a classic, but simply a solid game.

My thinking was that, well, I also know it isn't bad game either and I was sure to actually enjoy it even if it's not a classic. It's a genre I like, it has a cool, different theme and it just seems wellmade. So I decided to take a risk and get it. I hope to try it soon! I'm also eyeing comments on the expansion as it's not expensive, either.

After the convention we went to play with out new ill-gotten gains. We had a fourth player so we played Cosmic Encounter and the group absolutely loved it! We laughed a ton and they kept being amazed at how "broken" all powers were. We played it four times in a row :)

By the way, both were unpunched and Cosmic Encounter's expansion was in shrink. I truly don't get gamers sometimes haha

This isn't actually a board game, but my talk about Duel of Ages II a few weeks back inspired me to pick up the Duel of Ages II Codex. This is basically a catch-all book dedicated to Duel of Ages II, written by designer Brett Murrell. Inside is the final version of the living rules that have been fine-tuned over the last few years. It also includes a voluminous strategy section, confirming my previous thread that it's a much deeper, more strategic game than it appears on the surface. It goes through building a team of characters, platter selection, tactical considerations, when to draw specific kinds of cards, even a short guide on introducing the game to new players. The back half is an individual strategy guide to every single character, what they are good at and their vulnerabilities. Additionally it gives a little rundown of how best to leverage their advantages in the game, and how they change the strategy of the board. It reinforces my hunch that the proper way to view DoAII is as a grand strategy game with a very silly candy coating.

I was expecting to be interested in it, but the Codex has actually gives a really deep look into what went into such a massive game. It's not as good as playing the game itself obviously, but it does provide its own kind of satisfaction. I find myself picking it up to read a few pages whenever I get a spare moment.

Just got back from Chi-town after seeing Jexik. Played Pandemic Reign of Cthulhu. Definetely as good or better than the original as it's more interesting, mechanically, and there's a much different pacing.

Well worth the $

I picked up a copy of Thunder Road for $40. Not bad for one in good condition.
