Do you like Chris Claremont? His writing style? His message and themes? Because if you do you're going to love the latest X-men movie. It feels like Claremont and I mean that in both the best and the worst ways possible. It's a lot of talk talk talk with a dash here and there of action and even that action is relegated mostly to the destruction of property. It's two themes are the only two that Claremont ever knew; persecution of "the other" is wrong and that people have free will in choosing which side they will come down on be it good or evil. There are bright moments though. First, lets give thanks to all that's is holy that they got a different makeup artist for James McAvoy if for no other reason than the toning down of his lipstick. He looked like a painted whore through most of X-men: First Class. Second, lets give a round of applause to the real stars of the movie, the Sentinels especially the ultra bad ass ones of the future. Not for a second do you doubt their power and menace. Also, the way in which Portal 2 Girl, "Blink" I think they call her, is shown using her power is very cool indeed. As for the acting, it's workman like. Not bad...but only Michael Fassbender as young Magneto really rocks it. At least he does until he puts on the Magneto helmet which just makes him look silly. It's a competent movie over all with few obvious weak points but it fails to astonish and if we are talking about the X-men that is a fatal flaw.
