iPhone/iPod Gaming Update- December

There Will Be Games

Thought I'd write up another couple of iPhone games I've checked out...there's been some really good ones to come out over the last month and if you're looking for a good time for about a dollar, it's a good way to get a fix.

COBRA COMMAND- If there were ever an 80's arcade game I never thought I'd see again, this is it.  It's one of those that time forgot.  But I'm really happy to see it again, because I LOVED this game when I was a kid. Playing it again on the iPhone I was surprised at how much I remebered about it- right down to the soundtrack and the crash animations. CC is one of those old laserdisc games (like SPACE ACE and DRAGON'S LAIR) so it's fully animated. Interestingly, it's a rail shooter (possibly one of the first, actually) and it has a little more gameplay than the others. You pilot a Cobra helicopter around the world and engage in dogfights (yes, a dogfighting helicopter) against terrorists. Shoot stuff before they shoot you. The end. The game is awesome, it has a great 1980s Japanimation (as opposed to anime) style, great 80's synth-rock music, and if you were like me and crew up in the middle of the "super vehicle" craze (see: AIRWOLF, BLUE THUNDER, MASK, KNIGHT RIDER, et. al), you'll love it. An unbelieveable bargain at 99 cents, and the game is hard as balls so it's got plenty of gameplay.

BATTLE OF WESNOTH- A disaster. BoW, as many know, is a great freeware PC game that's very similar to LANGRISSER, FIRE EMBLEM, and other JSRPGs. The iPhone port is, as of this writing, TERRIBLE. It's unbelievably laggy, slow, and practically unplayable. However, it has promise because it really is a 1:1 conversion of the game. Maybe updates will fix it, but for right now I feel ripped off- I actually paid five bucks for it.

SWORD OF FARGOAL- Another arcane classic, dusted off and with a new coat of paint. This was an old Commodore 64 roguelike that I had when I was like eight years old. All new graphics and sound complement classic, simple gameplay. It's a perfect fit for the format with simple controls, easy-in-easy-out/bite-sized play, and instant gratification. There's not a lot of items or stats as in most roguelikes so it's more about exploration and survival. It's still extremely hard though, you've really got to grind for a while before you start descending at a good rate. Highly recommended if you like this kind of thing, on sale now for $2.99

ROGUE PLANET- I traded both ADVANCE WARS for the DS because I have several iPhone games that are very similar but a dollar (UNIWAR and MECHO WARS for example) but those games didn't have quite the polish or character of AW. This game almost does. It's as close to AW as an iPhone game has gotten, and if you want a great turn-based strategy game in that vein this is the one to get. Good graphics, good gameplay, and tons of maps and interesting units make RP one of the best turn-based strategy games on the iPhone. It's surprisingly good, and the interface is really outstanding. It's fully 3D, but I've seen where that makes a difference. Buy now.

JET CAR STUNTS- This game is nuts. You have an ugly looking polygon race car and you drive on these ugly looking polygon tracks that float in space. It looks like an Atari Jaguar game. However, it's also a great one, a ridiculously hard platform game where you've got to pilot said jet car through loops, jumps, and various obstacles without falling off. It's the kind of game where you might die 40 times getting through a track, but when you do it's an awesome feeling of accomplishment. It's really, really hard but it's also hugely addictive and will keep you playing for longer than you expect. If you like TRIALS HD on Xbox Live, this is a good mobile alternative.

That's all I got...I think I'm going to get that DRAGON'S LAIR if it goes below $5.

Sometime in the early 1980s, MichaelBarnes’ parents thought it would be a good idea to buy him a board game to keep him busy with some friends during one of those high-pressure, “free” timeshare vacations. It turned out to be a terrible idea, because the game was TSR’s Dungeon! - and the rest, as they say, is history. Michael has been involved with writing professionally about games since 2002, when he busked for store credit writing for Boulder Games’ newsletter. He has written for a number of international hobby gaming periodicals and popular Web sites. From 2004-2008, he was the co-owner of Atlanta Game Factory, a brick-and-mortar retail store. He is currently the co-founder of FortressAT.com and Nohighscores.com as well as the Editor-in-Chief of Miniature Market’s Review Corner feature. He is married with two childen and when he’s not playing some kind of game he enjoys stockpiling trivial information about music, comics and film.
