I tend to trade games a lot. If something isn't being played and I'm broke, I'll often trade it. Recently I was watching Tom Vasel's top #5-#2 Greatest Games Ever podcast, and I realized that I've traded some games I shouldn't have, that I've been way too fickle about getting rid of stuff. So here's a short list of games I never should have traded.
1. Tales of the Arabian Knights. I got it in a trade and the many rule corrections and seeming fuzziness of the rules turned me off. I don't know what I was thinking because my kids would love this.
2. Tigris and Euphrates. With the two-player map I can at least get my aspie gaming 11-year-old to play me. That kid will always play anything. I love that quirky little guy. He's the perfect gaming buddy.
3. Ticket to Ride Nordic Countries. I actually only rented this and my sons played some vicous games of it, but I think even my wife would play it.
4. Zooloretto. It reminded me of Blue Moon City, almost like the game was playing me, but the daughters love the animal theme and there is some potential meanness in there.
5. Pitchcar. I don't know what I was thinking. Sometimes games don't hit the table because my wife has some weird gaming hangup, not because the game isn't any good. The last time we played it some of the younger kids cried because of some imagined injustice and it just seemed like there were games I could get to the table more if I sold it. I dropped it on Ebay and eventually ended up not getting much for it because of a shipping mishap.
6. Galaxy Trucker. I've never owned this but it has been calling me for a while. My wife loves puzzle games. Ah crap, who am I kidding.
7. A Dog's Life. Someone on ToS talked me into this. It can turn into a tedious slog buy my daughters LOVE the dog theme. Earth Reborn is by the same designer, so they're pretty much interchangeable.
8. Ace of Aces. The kids have asked about this, especially on road trips. I got greedy and sold it.
9. Space Hulk. I sold it to a gaming friend for cost. It never hit the table because it's hard to sneak past the wife and needs a big table. I also felt like I was watching Antiques Roadshow whenever I pulled it out, like it was depreciating by being exposed to the air. Earth Reborn will probably fill this niche.
10. LightSpeed. I know it's not great, but a perfect camping game.
11. Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers. My ex-mormon brother won't play Ark of the Covenant because he's obsessed with religion and starts channeling Bill Maher if I bring it out.
There are others, but I haven't kept close track. I don't regret selling Agricola unplayed, or Combat Commander (we spent too much time in the rulebook and I kept wishing I was playing Duel of Ages, and it's probably awesome but I have Storms of Steel).
This is a boring, navel gazing post, but it will make a nice shopping list some day.
