Atop the slopes that rise behind the city of Delphi, two men, slightly out of breath from the climb, enter the temple to Apollo. Inside, the Pythia, chosen of the Sun God, inhales deep the vision giving gas from the cleft in the living rock below her perch and begins to writhe and speak in tongues. Eager petitioners shuffle closer anxious to hear what the future may hold but the two new comers show little concern. They are not here for divine guidance nor do they fear the unknown result of the future cast of a die. They are here to play board games. It is F:AT Thursday.
The True Believers numbered but two this week. Uba and Engineer Al continue to deal with the aftermath of the fire that wrecked their home and thus find themselves exhausted and spent at the end of the day. Totally understandable.
Josh and I once again broke out Mage Wars to start off the evening. I took the Priestess and Josh was the Warlock. It was a near run thing with Josh investing time and resources in calling forth his heavy hitting demon but this allowed my Priestess the time to get her formidable defenses in place. The demon in the end was swarmed upon by my minions and then they were able to bring the pain to Warlock Town.
Josh had some concerns that the spell Heal might be overpowered. It is a strong spell and can undo a lot of damage. Secretly I think he may be right but as the Priestess' healing happens in a large quantity all at once while the Warlock's health increasing effects happen in smaller amounts but more frequently it may just be perception. I think we need to track the total healing over the course of a game to get a clearer picture. Openly, I told him to wash the sand out of his lady parts and admit that I'm just a FORCE in the arena.
Then we played a game of Omen: A Reign of War. This game has real staying power. We have played it many many times between us and I still find it fresh and engaging. Yes it has been said a thousand times but I'll say it once again. The artwork is just stunning. What a triumph of visuals. The games, between two players who know the game, always seem to be close. I was on the way to victory but I played a treasure card for it's effect and failed to capitalize on it. In a moment of weakness...I did not win.
