Yeah, it is tough. Pulls no punches and isn't trying to crack you up or anything. You just lose with one misstep. Keep coming back though, never has making a fucking shovel seemed so important.

You'll get better, also. There are some things that seem like "why would I bother?" that are actually really important. The insane importance of building shovel is a great example of this---if you didn't play a few games and get a feel for the events, you'd have no idea how important the stupid shovel is.

I got my copy of the Sailor, King Kong scenario, and the beach cards from Portal in Poland. I wish I had seen the Livingston scenario, I would have put it in the same package. I <3 this game, and it hating you is absolutely right. The wood scenario can be reguarly won, though, you just need to get used to the game and realize what is important.

The crazy thing is then you move to another scenario and you start doing the same things you did in the Castaways scenario and it's like... NOPE, now you don't give a shit about weather or surplus anything. Completely different game.

I certainly found it interesting and I'm looking forward to setting it up for a serious play very soon, but this struck me immediately as a game that truly hates those who are playing it. I got the feeling it utterly rejoices in seeing its players suffer and their in-game representatives die horrible deaths.

This.
I personally love it but it just won't come out in my regular gaming group because other folks share that exact sentiment. Me? I can't wait for the expansion.

I finally got to play this last night, and we pushed through four plays. First three was the first scenario, which we won once, and the second was the cursed island which we lost.

Any comments on the individual scenarios? Do they alter the play substantially, or are they more cosmetic. The cursed island didn't seem the most vibrant scenario, but that could also be the luck of the even deck.

They don't change the base game all that much, but they change the aspect you're maximizing. So scenario one is all about generating surplus resources and weather. But then other scenarios are barely about weather at all so it can really fuck you up if you go from, say, scenario 1 to a scenario where really all you have to do is build a shelter and no roof. Instead you have to max pallisade and weapon strength (Cannibal Island).
