Spooked by the tumble down the pile and the screaming by Brother, I step back and grip the haft of my ax, nervous. Did I see or hear something scuttle away during the kerfuffle?

(Is this discern realities? I think so. So I think that's a WIS roll)

Were all these skulls and bodies actually killed by the lava? My shocked (now drunk?) bandmate couldn't figure it out, but I might be able to. I know a little something about materials and fire, and have seen animal bones that were scorched in my kiln before (wayward youth...)...

You calm yourself despite the pain shooting up your leg, and with gritted teeth you meet the gaze of the robed man for a moment. Then, shouts of the villagers on the other side of the rock pile reach you, and the stranger disappears amongst the heaps of rubble on the far side of the altar.

You are stuck in place until someone helps you get free.

You dash over in time to lend Valga a hand.

You take two steps up the unstable pile before slipping and falling back to the ground. The dwarven smith arrives in time to help you back to your feet immediately. You see that Steini and Hafle have set off to the west in search of another way around.

What do you do?

To the east, the rubble heap meets a massive fallen section of wall that seems like it might be even harder to surmount. But to the west, it looks like the pile diminishes, so you head in that direction.

Steini spots a point where one of the fallen columns creates a low point amongst the debris, offering solid footing for you to traverse it. You both climb up onto it, take a few steps, and jump down onto solid ground on the far side. There, you see Brother Thunke, his leg caught amongst the stones. Not unlike a hare Steini might find in one of his traps.

You notice that Gerdga the miner has moved onto a patch of lava to inspect something, and you follow to peer over her shoulder.

You do not have to discern realities in this instance.

You step closer to the depression and kneel to examine it. It is the size and shape of an adult human. It's as if the lava were a snow bank, and someone had laid upon it the way children do to make an impression with his or her body, but then the snow had melted, softening the shape and removing surface details. Thanks to your familiarity with digging and your inspection of this porous black stuff, you recognize that the shape was definitely not carved out with tools.

All the shouting and scrabbling ahead makes you anxious. You take a few steps back into the shadow of a broken wall, instinctively seeking shelter in order to assess the situation.

Suddenly, you are seized from behind! Both of your arms are pulled behind your back, and a hand clamps down over your mouth, silencing you. There appear to be two assailants. With all of their attention on other things, none of your companions notice your situation. You still have a grip on your axe with one hand, but both arms are pinned.

A fit of coughing grips me as I land on the solid ground. I wipe a little blood from the corner of my mouth and move carefully towards Brother Thunke, scanning the ground for areas that may trap me as well.

Jorda wonders if what killed these people will come back shortly, or if it gives a clue for potential danger.
