I think some of the stuff FFG is doing right now is impressively innovative. Mansions of Madness - despite the problems with print errors and balance - has a very unique story telling mechanism, and the campaing system in Descent 2. ed. is really good. Personally I also think the whole LCG-model is unique, as is the way deck building works in the Star Wars LCG. And if we go back a couple of years Corey made an impressive AI system for Gears of War, a system that seems to be the inspiration for the upcoming Descent tournament sets.
But when it comes to themes I kinda agree that it's not all that new. But then again they made Infiltration, and some of their non-inhouse stuff like Black Gold and Winter Tales is not your common fantasy/sci-fi fare.
Personally I love FFG. I think they make great games and I absolutely love how I can expect to get more stuff for Eldritch Horror soon since I play it a lot. I totally get if others don't like their stuff (I really don't, but I accpet it ), but saying they're not pushing the envelope when it comes to game design is nonsense.

for me its not a question of innovation but execution. FFG are imo more innovative and risk taking the majority of other companies in the game. Even the star wars lcg has some innovation in it. Its simplified deck building system is a stroke of genius even if the rest of the game is a cluttered version of magic. Innovation tends to be baby steps. Mansions is a game i wanted to love a lot more than i do, since it tended just to involve a linear crawl through some cards that were interesting until i flipped them over and found not a lot. The later expansion look like they might improve this though.
