Let's talk Kemet

Let's talk Kemet was created by Bull Nakano
I've played Kemet 5 times now, not always with the same group, and I've noticed the game coming to the same end every time. A player gets to 8VP on turn 4 or 5, and the table beats them back under 8 so the game doesn't end. Then the next turn players go on an all out bloody point grab as they attempt to have the lead at the end.

While I very much enjoy the game, I'm not sure how much I like the way the endgame has played out for me. It sort of levels the game off for that last turn where it's literally anybody's game so long as they kept up with the pack in the first 4-5 turns.

Kemet looked interesting to me but I've heard similar stories to what you describe. I've also seen it mentioned that going last on the final turn is huge.

What's really stopped me from seeking out Kemet is that I'm a proud Cyclades owner and don't get it to the table enough. The consistent comparisons between the two has pushed me away from Kemet as I'd rather spend the time playing the game I already have. Especially with the Hades expansion, I don't really need another game like this.

Eh, it does often come down to a photo finish like that a lot, where as long as you're within a point or two you might have a shot at it. But I like that. And yes, going last is a distinct advantage, which is why whoever chooses turn order (player with lowest VP) has to do so carefully. The tie breaker is whoever goes earlier in the round.

I see Kemet as a terrific game of opportunity... You need to be hyper-aware of every possible way to score a VP, because each one is so crucial, and there are some clever ways to take advantage of situations and other players. This has to be one of the most interactive games ever, not only because of the constant conflict, but because you really need to be on top of what everyone else is up to.

Cyclades kind of had the same thing, to a degree. You'd get 3/4 the way to building your last metropolis and BOOM, you get tagged by a flurry of attacks or get cockblocked on the bidding so you can't finish.

Then, the guy who was chilling in the background swoops in and unexpectedly drops some cards or does one tactical strike unexpectedly, and BOOM, winner winner chicken dinner.

To me, that's not a bug, it's a feature. The "sneaky fuck gambit" makes games exciting and garners unpredictability, long term thinking, and slowly building momentum instead of one ultra-aggressive player going nuts.

Just my 2C

I really haven't warmed to Kemet - not only for the issues you describe but the utterly bewildering array of tile purchases that leaves everyone confused about the capabilities of the different players during the game. Cyclades and Wallenstein do the same "brutal combat euro" thing, but neater and better IMO.

Expansion coming this year. No real details yet, but a new type of pyramid was mentioned.
