Old ATers might be interested in this trip down memory lane. Lots of commentary on the cover art.

Those monsters always looked like they were staring directly at YOU, and wanted YOU dead. Good times. :)

You are nine years old, and have a small amount of pocket money to spend. You are standing in a generic branch of WH Smiths in the South east of England. It is the summer holidays, and you have been dragged around the shops on a Saturday afternoon by your Mum. Finally it is your time to shine.

this was definitely me.

This site:

www.fightingfantasygamebooks.com/games.htm

Has some reprints that they are doing as well as a lot of data on the FF gamebooks. The specific link includes a Spectrum emulator and computer versions of a few of the books for free download.

These books rock my cock. I think I'll start re-reading them again.
Don't know where that prick gets off bagging appointment with fear tho - that was one of my favs! Island of the Lizard king on the other hand was pretty forgettable.

I remember liking that one best off all. It was a bit more complex than the others too, wasn't it? I can't quite remember, I had the whole series at one point (handed down to me by my old man), but I was little and they're long gone now.

Did anyone ever play the Sagard the Barbarian series? They were a little simplistic, but I remember liking them.

I enjoyed Sagard -- but I think I got rid of those years ago.

I knew it! After all these years, I find out that Creature of Havoc was broken, and there was no way to win it!

Yeah it was broken. There was a clue along the lines of "When you reach a paragraph that begins with "The passage slopes to the left...", add 40 to the paragraph number to find a secret passage." Problem was that the paragraph you were meant to add 40 to didn't start with that line!
As a kid I busted this by reading every paragraph 'till i found the one saying you found the secret passage. Anyway apart from that fuckup Creature of Havok was fucking amazing, probably the best of the lot. Epic as shit.

There's a complete torrent of all the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks out there, if people wanted to get their hands on some that they've never seen.

I do love me some FF...

And while Creature of Havoc was broken, they did release a patch in the form of a page that you could glue into your book.

(I keed- but if book publishers ran like software publishers, then who knows?)
