Some guidance with DOOM, please

I recently acquired DOOM in a trade, but not the expansion.

What are the free/easy elements of the expansion that are a must to port over?

Also, any other advice for the game? I hear it's similar in system to Descent, which I know but Doom is harder on the marines, while Descent is harder for the Overlord. If that's the case, I think as long as I let everyone know they're going to die horribly a lot that it'll be more palatable.

Anyway, any advice would be great - the figures are SWEET. Cant believe I traded LotR Deluxe for this orgy of plastic demons =D

The expansion is a MUST for the game but don't buy for the option of easier difficulty for the marines. It should be hard for the marines, that is the fun and challenge of the game.

Use the expansion deck and definitely use the rules for setting up the board before starting.

The new monsters are hardly what I'd called essential.

I thoroughly agree, not like those BULLSHIT 3rd ed. Space Hulk rules.

really, there's not a whole lot essential from the expansion. the expansion deck and monsters are cool, but umm...not easy to port over.

really the Dud card errata and the difficulty modifiers are it.

I haven't tried the deathmatch game at all, so I don't know how easy that would be to bring over (i wouldn't think very hard) or whether it'd be worth.

Doom trumps Spacehulk in all respects.

There are several paramount moments when gamers made a complete ass of themselves, like When Aldie banned Barnes, when gamers misuse the term "passive-aggressive" and when gamers paid over $100 for SpaceHulk

These moments will rein in the Hall of Stupid forever.

The dud card ruling is the only thing that springs to mind. I also set up the board beforehand, but I don't actually remember that being in the expansion rules.

Except component quality and source material. And the fact that the gameplay is very different.

Worth owning both IMO.

Eh. If you go by the missions in the book, Doom is too long for what it is. I prefer the slightly tighter corridors of Space Hulk as well. Doom is a hard game, but I wouldn't say it has the tension or atmosphere of Space Hulk. And variety does not necessarily mean it's a better game. Space Hulk is the shining example of "less is more."

I didn't and couldn't own Space Hulk until last year. I'm glad I had to opportunity to do so, I don't regret purchasing it at all. I just use the 1st edition rules.

Not to derail, but Browncoat, do you know where I might be able to get a copy of the 1st edition rules?

I don't think I'd trust 1st edition rules with the loadouts in the 3rd edition scenarios. I know we've played 2nd ed. scenarios with 1st. ed rules, and they come out broken just about every time.

1st ed. rules work just fine. The only major changes are jams and how they affect overwatch. Not that big of a difference. 3rd edition is broken as they are.

I still use the Command Point redraw from 3rd as opposed to the decrease time.

I have a print out of the first edition rules. If I get the chance to scan them, I'll send them to you.

THAT'S RIGHT. I'M DISTRIBUTING THE RULES, GW. EAT MY BALLS. PRIVATEER PRESS OWNS.

So what are the new dud cards? I see in the expansion rules that they replace the old ones, but dont know what they now say.

And does anyone use a sand timer with DOOM? (necessitating you pre set up sections and keep them hidden)

It was changed to:

“Play after a marine makes an attack roll but does not
roll an ammo use symbol. The marine must expend
ammo as though he had rolled an ammo use symbol.”
