It's the look-left, look-right, look-center, which-takes-priority-when-distance-is-tied thing that generally needs to be open on the table at all times with my group. In the automated version Frankie just starts walking over people while you watch. It'd help if we played it more than once a year.
Played it once and thought it was OK. It's cute and is good for 20 minutes with the kiddos. But it seems like it could get redundant after multiple plays.
I like it as well. It's a very simple game and I bet you could have a blast playing with your kids. The theme is silly but executed well enough...plus who doesn't love constructing a monster from cardboard pieces? Once you get the monster movement rules and you understand how to screw over everyone else it becomes a good time. Just play it fast and play it for fun...don't stress out about optimizing every single move you make. I think a timer should be mandatory since you're running for you'r goddamn life...and being chased should require you to think quickly.
The few times per year that I get dragged into Fearsome Floors, I always insist that we play with two monsters: One monster in the normal position (facing right-ish), and an additional monster in the space below the first monster (facing down). Two monsters = much more carnage.

However you have to play with at least 4, and enforce that turns must take no more than 10 seconds. The fun in the game is fucking up your move or luring the monster towards an opponent.
Agree with Frank here. This one needs a turn timer as badly as Formula De-style race games do. Using one, it's great fun. Without, it can turn into an irritating optimization exercise (like playing Formula De with 18xx fans). (I traded my copy away because I just can't get 4 together for anything other than wargames, but I thought it was good fun if played at a breakneck pace...)
