Chart of games played 2003 - 2013

It looks as if the chart requires a certain minimum number of plays from a game for it to be listed and neither M'44 nor CC:A probably reached that number after CC:A was published.

I think that's just people switching from M'44 to Commands & Colors: Ancients, which came out in 2006.ldsdbomber wrote: there must be a very strong effect of people stopping logging and/or being drowned by new users / cult of the new, I find it hard to believe for example that Memoir 44 died off as in that chart. Still pretty cool chart, though obviously very euro centric, as to be expected

Yeah it's definitely a list only of games that logged some fraction of the total for the time period. There is probably supposed to be some big "OTHER" blob that takes up half the chart. This is a percentage plot ONLY of plays of games that went over a threshhold of total games played.
In that way it's fitting, as it's a fraction of a fraction of information supplied by a fraction of a fraction of game players.

I think it's pretty representative. Just a hunch though. The 2013 numbers are certainly not good enough.

From my point of view:
1. This would not represent my game club at all.
2. There are 20+ people in my local club and most of them have never heard of BGG. 2-3 of them are actually collectors btw. I have run a twice yearly conventions for most of the last 13 years and have hardly heard BGG mentioned. Our metropolitan area is 100K + btw. I have never heard anybody say they record games at BGG. So potentially many games played are not logged. Maybe they do it secretly , who knows.
In the interest of full disclosure: I should point out we are usually 1-2 years behind any other trend out here(wiggers just arrived last week!), so maybe the same with games.
It's still interesting to see what's being recorded over at TOS, and I thank the original poster for putting it up.
The only games we play on the chart are Eclipse, Small World (rare) and King of Tokyo.
