Like many folks, I really enjoy lists, they're just interesting to get a glimpse at a person's tastes. Over on BGG there's a geeklist challenge to post a top 20 list. I was thinking about it, but I thought just 20 would be too limited to give a fuller picture of my taste, so I arrived with Bull Nakano's top 53 Games of All-Time .

It was a bit more work to put together than I thought it would be, but I'm actually pretty happy with it, and I feel it was a good exercise.

What do you all think of such lists? If you want share your top games.

Lists are fun. But 53? You couldn't have cut three games? I think I'd have a hard time filling out a Top 20, I just don't get to play games that much.

Thumbs up for RftG, Heroscape, and Avalon being high up there. They'd be in my top ten too; I also came from playing M:tG many years ago (I was a only about 9 when I started playing). I have a hard time coming up with even 20 games I think. The order here is not exact.

RftG
Heroscape
Avalon
Dominion
Summoner Wars
Dead of Winter
Settlers of Catan
Revolution!
Nexus Ops
Risk Legacy
7 Wonders
Cosmic Encounter
Taluva
Puzzle Strike
M:tG
Acquire
Junta
RoboRally
Power Grid
Cyclades

I assembled this just by going off my ratings on BGG for 8 and above. A lot of my high rankings are just expansions for some of my favorite games. I probably have more plays in my top 5 games than all other games played combined. Dominion, RftG, M:tG, Heroscape, 7 Wonders, and maybe Avalon have gone through periods of excessive amounts of play. Avalon is my favorite game right now, but I find myself playing it with "non-gamers" the most, but I'm okay with that.

I've played Cyclades 2-3 times, and Junta only once, but they've been memorable.

Games I'd like to play that I could see being in my top 20 if I played them (enough)?
El Grande (Never played, but I like some of the older, cleaner, and yet more interactive Euros)
Mage Wars (I kind of didn't play it out of spite because of how similar its logo looked to Summoner Wars)
Dungeon Command
Android Netrunner (2 or 3 games)

Sadly, your list just barely missed making my top 100 interesting lists of all time. On the bright side, It would have made a top 103 list though.

I could have cut 3, I made the physical list at 4am, then the next day started listing them from the bottom up, when I got into the single digits I realised I'd goofed, but I already did the entries so I left it. I like how it pushed people to the 3rd page anyway, since there's some conclusion there.

I find these lists interesting by other people,
but just can't do them myself. Setting a strict
ordering over broad categories just seems too difficult.

About the best that I think I can do is come up with the
game that I'd recognize as top in its class. So, I can MAYBE
do a top light strategic WWII game; a top heavy strategic
WWII game, ect.

Even then it's difficult though.

I totally get this, this is how I feel about music. There're so many different genres and sub-genres that I can't even wrap my mind around approaching something like that. Maybe my somewhat limited interest (as in the types of games I like) in a pretty niche hobby makes it easier for me to approach. Also I could make a game easier that I could write a song, despite having high musical intelligence.

heh. I make up little songs all the time.
None are any good, but like poetry, NOT
having much understanding probably makes it
easier.

Games though? I could NEVER make a game that
satisfied me.

I like that your 1000th post to this site contains an anal sex innuendo.

Congrats!

As mentioned earlier, I love lists but I hate rankings. If I were to give a top 10 or 20, they'd all be bundled into nebulous equal groups of five or something.
