The original mod is free. To get it to work, you need both Arma 2 and Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead. (I think both are currently on sale through Steam, as a package, for $6.25.)

I also recommend that you use DayZ Commander to keep track of servers, keep all DayZ components up to date, and launch the game. A link:

www.dayzcommander.com/

There's also a stand-alone DayZ that doesn't require Arma 2. It's in Beta, costs $30, and I've never played it.

Edit: Sorry, took too long and was beaten to the punch.

I realize the zombies aren't really the point of DayZ, but why does there never seem to be any of them around?

I second hotseat's question.

Game looks like it COULD have a cool vibe, but I often wondered if it indeed translated knowing the gamer type who frequents FPSs.

Have you played it or are you asking because you've watched videos?

The reason I'm asking, is because they are all around in the Mod, but from the videos I've seen of the standalone (the Morgan Freeman ones particularly), they don't seem to be very prevelent. Not sure why.

I only started playing the Day Z mod a few days ago, but the servers I've tried have plenty of zombies. I know because I always die within 10 minutes, and it's always from a zombie.

The main reason for my insta-death is that the Arma 2 inventory system is completely counterintuitive. It takes me nearly 15 minutes to figure out how to pick up a knife, which doesn't help when a zombie can kill me in two. Assuming that you can find a knife in the first place. (Hint: Look in your back, as a friendly local may have stashed one there for you.)

I also read a "helpful" comment that zombies won't chase you if you get out of their LOS. Yet every time I shut myself inside a metal crate (and pray), zombies open it up within seconds and steal my kidneys.

I dunno. The game has a cool STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl vibe. And hey, it's free if you already own the complete ARMA 2 package.

Yeah the Zombies really are everywhere in the mod. They're also fast as hell so to lose them you need to run around objects that obscure line of site. If you run around and weave between groups of the wide pine trees it works pretty well. I would not recommend going into a building unless they are pretty far behind you. Running around the building and darting away is a better bet.

The scariest thing about running across a field into a town is that anyone watching the town from a distance will see the large train of Zombies running at high speed and you will clearly stand out. Difficult to sneak and hide when you have zombies sniffing you out.

Played it for a while last summer, had a blast.

It's a pretty stressful and intense game. You really do have to worry about bleeding out, limping, the whole nine... basically everything in the game is out to get you. Zombies are definitely abundant, even in the wild they can surprise you at times when you least expect it.

I always get a bit nervous when I enter a city, anything can happen. Whenever I hear gunshots nearby, I always tense up because you don't know where it's coming from half the time.

Of course, the people make it what it is. People forming cults, survivalist groups, raiders... you name it it's in the game. Anyone who's played the game has probably had some interesting interactions with the people in the game.

Haven't touched it recently but I enjoyed it more for the experience rather than the gameplay itself, which I found a bit clunky and not very intuitive, especially for new players.

OK. Just downloaded all the Arma II shit and ready to start DayZ. Any chance of meeting up with others? Are there different servers or something?

Any help I can get would be good. Should I just play normal Arma II until I grok the interface?
