We like our tough guys here at F:AT and there's none tougher than Steve McQueen so I thought I'd share.

I was in Target last night picking up some random crap and seeing if that copy of HOUSE OF THE DEAD OVERKILL that's sitting in clearance is down to under $20 yet and I saw that they've got a new "hip t-shirt" area. Most of them are the usual jumped-the-shark retro stuff, but I'll be damned if they didn't have a freaking BULLITT shirt. And it's not one of those stupid appropriated-by-a-graphic-designer ripoffs, it's an official Steve McQueen product.

It's a pretty nice design on a distressed, black-and-gray shirt. Big silhouette image of McQueen on the front as on the BULLITT poster with the shoulder holsters. The back has a big image of the Mustang.

Not a bad fashion purchase for $12.99, just not sure if the target demographic even knows who the hell Steve McQueen is.

I'm going to keep checking, maybe they'll turn up with a FRENCH CONNECTION tee next.

Steve McQueen rocks. Wasn't the name of the film changed in the States to "The Freedom Connection" for fear of insulting the likes of ....

They actually had an Eastwood shirt too, but I didn't like it. Drawing of Eastwood, text- "The Good".

Now, if they had a "The Bad" shirt with Van Cleef on it...

You stay away from the Thousand Oaks Target--I've had my eye on the HOTD:O in the clearance rack for weeks.

Target has been selling some cool clothes for many years now. I personally like to buy solid basics there, like plain t-shirts that I can wear to work, or socks. Thrift shops are more fun, but very hit or miss.

I'd go for an Eli Wallach shirt myself.

Shit, if they put a Cagney shirt out I'd buy two.

My favorite Cagney role is him as the Captain in Mr. Roberts.

No way man, Cody Jarrett in WHITE HEAT or Tom Powers in THE PUBLIC ENEMY. Cody Jarrett is the classic psychopathic gangster- he's a total ball of pent-up badness in that movie. I love that thing at the beginning of THE PUBLIC ENEMY where it shows the characters and Cagney winks and gives you a little one-two jab. Then, later on, he shoves a grapefruit in that lady's face.

I was just about to comment that Cagney was just as dangerous with a grapefruit as a Tommy gun!

So, how long do you guys think it'll be before Bullitt gets a reboot?

Also, I fucking love Bullitt.

Call me an asshole , but I don't think Bullitt should ever be remade. I know for a fact that a remake would never hold up to the original- not in today's Hollywood. Plus it would be, like, I don't know... sacrilrigeous or something.

Who the hell would take McQueen's place? And, how many ways could they possibly screw up THE chase scene?

I heard about a possible BULLITT remake a couple of years ago. Maybe somebody wised up and realized that it ought to be left alone. I'm sure they'd modernize it into oblivion, replacing that to-die-for Mustang with whatever the current "retro" styled model happens to be.

It's interesting to me that BULLITT predates DIRTY HARRY and THE FRENCH CONNECTION yet it takes a TOTALLY different approach to the hot-headed, maverick cop thing. Bullitt is subtly counterculture (check out his posters the next time you see it), and he comes off as a good guy that just happens to be on the right side of the law. And in the late 1960s, the law and counterculture were very much at odds. Then, a couple of years later, we get the psychopathic/facistic/ultra right wing cops in DIRTY HARRY and THE FRENCH CONNECTION. It's an interesting social angle.
