Today, I played Diplomacy. This was essentially my first time playing. Again, I was Russia. I made some bad moves early on which didn't help me. My alliance with Turkey that should have lasted for most of the game was broken by Turkey very early, and screwed me heavily. But it also left Turkey stuck fighting Austria and Italy by himself with out much opportunity to expand. I think he made a poor decision, but I was the first eliminated shortly after, so what do I know? Austria was eliminated right after me, and Germany a few turns later. The other 4 people decided to end it in a draw.
I'm not sure about this game. The diplomacy aspect is pretty unique, but I don't know if it is worth the time investment and potential to be sitting out for a lot of the game if you get eliminated. I think I'd probably rather play Game of Thrones. I had to buy a copy of Diplomacy for this, so maybe I'll try it again in a while and see how I like it then.

Was it an annoying pain in the ass to set up? Yeah.
Did it take three sessions of 2-3 hours each to finish? Yes...
Was it kick ass? Hell yes. There is so much variety it just never gets old. I like collecting a zillion items and spells. I love all the cool encounters that can happen. Still the best adventure game on the market (that I've played). Glad I didn't cave in and get Eldritch Horror. Just don't see the point.

There's nothing to it. It has no strategy. It has no fun. The components are made of a bad, mushy paper and the art is simply traced over photographs ala A Touch of Evil but significantly worse. It's not that it's a terrible game, is that there's no reason to play it over any other game I've ever seen.
On the other hand,as of yesterday I have over 1000 games of Android: Netrunner under my belt. What a difference the right game makes!

We played Steam, which was very cutthroat. Sly moves were made and weird rail configuration were created. Then we moved to two games of Ticket to Ride: Europe which is always enjoyable. We then played Kingdom Builder with the Nomads expansion. Weirdly, no Nomads maps appeared. The only component from the Nomads that came out was a kingdom card (the Shepherd), which was new to us all. Finally we pulled out Agricola with Farmers of the Moor. This lasted quite a while, but we enjoyed it. The game is very, very thematic. It's interesting just to come up with the thematic interpretation of the minor improvements. I built a nearly perfect farm in this one (all filled spaces with no negatives and a clay house).

My experience is that most games end in a draw or shared victory. I think the original board is the main cause. There are many Stalemate Lines.
I don't think it is worth the time commitment. Games can easily run 7+ hours and, as you point out, if you are eliminated or worse reduced to a point where you have no power to affect the game other than to King make then it's going to be a long day for you.

Germany tried to convince me to make some deals with other people that would allow my one remaining army to stay on the board. Because he "wanted to take me to the end," and also didn't want someone more powerful to end up with more supply centers right at his back. Screw you; I'm not going to make your game easier just so I can continue to have no impact. We're at my house, so Austria and I are going to go play some Nidhogg .

It is such a waste of time...there are tons of games now that do what it did and more in literally a tenth of the time...and without expecting struggling players to hang in there for eight hours while two or three leading players fight it out.
It's an important game, it had its time, but it's over and it's time to bury it. It's one of the very few games I absolutely refuse to play.
Don't kid yourself that there is anything timeless or worth revisiting about it.
