On the one hand: Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba (Stringer!): Woo hoo!

OTOH: Space exploration that looks completely simple, sanitized, and predictable. A script that has transformed from "Alien prequel" (awful) to "#Alien but really about the origins of humanity!" (potentially even worse because it lacks focus.)

This is Ridley Scott's career arc, writ large. Story doesn't matter anymore because everything can be big (1492!) No bigger (Gladiator!) No BIGGER (Kingdom of Heaven!) What is this "pace and direction" thing you speak of?

well, at least we can look forward to all talking about it together here on F:AT. I think those discussions will be cool. The John Carter stuff has been fun to read.

Saw the trailer when I went to see John Carter. Man, it was awesome, the music especially sent chills down my spine. I hope it doesn't suck.

I gotta think this trailer is just outlining the first 2 acts of the film. We all know the last act is gonna be a repeat of Alien with everyone being picked off one by one. I don't believe the "this isn't an alien prequel" spin. We will see Aliens fucking shit up bigtime. I'm already anticipating an Alien/Aliens viewing before the film. Though I'm not sure Ridley will include the concept of an Alien queen, so probably should just stick to Alien. But damn, never need an excuse to watch Aliens! Hopefully the Quadrilogy goes on sale in anticipation for the movie.

Fixed. Fincher's 'Alien 3' is excellent. Much of the backlash on its release was due to fans being so obsessed with 'Marines in Space' that they wanted more of the same, which didn't happen. Each of the first three movies is different in tone, mood, and theme, but all of them are great Alien movies.

You're right that the biggest problem with Alien 3 is that it's not Aliens. I'll give you that and it certainly accounts for MOST of my problems with the movie. But even then, i can't sit through that. It's try to be Alien and it just isn't. The creature isn't scary, and Alien: Ressurection ruins Alien 3 anyway.
