I actually appreciate what Lucas is trying to do with this. But the previews look painfully bad. I'm just not that much of a kid at heart to watch something THAT cheesy.
I'm totally a kid at heart. I look forward to being emotionally manipulated by this movie. Since I don't know any 8-11 year old boys, I'm going to look for a seat next to one in the theatre so I have someone to gasp and cheer with.
“Red Tails” tells an important World War II story of brave black soldiers chafing at the constraints of government-enforced racial segregation. It’s gratifying to finally see such a story told, with a complement of able black actors, in a movie to which the name of Tyler Perry is not appended. - Kurt Loder (who you may remember from MTV news..he reviews movies now)
A strange thing to say because this very same story was told in 1995 in a movie called Tuskegee Airmen.
See, I like that it's a super cheesy earnest go America movie with a black cast and "based on true events" on a culturally relevant African American story. I find that an admirable move. But I don't generally watch the super cheesy earnest action movies with white casts, "based on true events" movies either, so...
I'm not watching this for another 20 years until Lucas fixes it. i hear that one of the protagonists fires first in one of the battles. I won't let my family see such barbaric violence.

Sounds like they accidentlly ran the review for the 1995 movie. I think what he meant to say was:
The subject matter is very compelling. I'd like to say The Tuskeege Airmen is better but I can't. As I remember, it managed to do a very mediocre job with the materiel as well.

You realize it has really big, really loud bad-ass airplanes, right? S.
The trailers looked kinda lame but I do love me some dogfighting combat aircraft. I cut my video game teeth on Falcon 3.0 and have been hooked ever since.
I like historical films too so it's been on my radar but I have my doubts about how well it's put together so still waiting for a few reviews.
I saw it tonight. It was exactly what I expected, so I wasn't disappointed. It's a formulaic story that pays homage to old war movies with comic book dialogue, iconic, but very two dimensional characters, and lots of bad ass planes blowing shit up. I wouldn't recommend it to adults, but it's better than most of the crappy kids movies I've had to sit through. I would recommend it for kids who are into airplanes and old enough to deal with blood, dudes catching on fire, and the death of primary characters.
