Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)

Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.

× Welcome to one of the oldest board game communities on the Internet. That may sound like hyperbole but it really is true.

We are really happy to have you here. Unfortunately, being online we can't bond with you over a game so you'd know right away how happy we are to meet you. For now, you'll just have to take our word for it.

This site has always thrived on lively discussion and spirited but civil debate. We hope that newcomers here will find a welcoming atmosphere where game enthusiasts of all levels of experience and commitment will have something to add to the conversation. You never need to prove your “gamer cred” here. Whether you have been playing board games for a few months or a few decades; whether you have a huge collection or a small one; whether you have been a member here for years or just joined today – your opinion is valued here.

We know that it can be intimidating to jump into a new community and want to assure you that this is NOT the kind of forum where people will tell you that you posted something in the wrong place, or that you should have found an existing thread on the topic, or that you shouldn’t have resurrected an old thread.

So if you find a thread or an article discussion that interests you, whether it is old or new, feel free to jump in. Want to discuss a specific game or board gaming related topic just start a new topic. If you don’t know which forum to put it in, just make your best guess (we really don’t care all that much. It’s easy enough for a moderator to move it or merge it, if necessary).

A good place to get started is by introducing yourself in the “New Members Introduce Yourself” thread (below) or by telling us what you have been playing in the “What BOARD GAME(s) have you been playing?" thread ( therewillbe.games/forum/35-mos-eisley-ca...ave-you-been-playing ).

Have fun, and we look forward to hearing from you.

Milwaukee is a nice town from what I've heard. Sounds like you've found a crowd to game with as well. Welcome aboard.

Hey everyone. I've been a lurker for about two months and decided I'd jump into the fray. Before I introduce myself, I'd like to thank y'all for the high level of discourse here. I also lurk at that other board game site and find the conversations there overwhelmingly dull, unimaginative and stultifying. I like how F:AT mixes the low brow with the high, and how even the most pseudo-academic debates here have a kind of smirking self-awareness that keeps things grounded.

I've also grown to admire the individual opinions here. In particular, Mr. Barnes has quickly become my favorite board game writer and I wish there were more voices of his caliber in this hobby.

Now about me: early 30s, environmental scientist, recently moved from the East Coast to a small college city in the Appalachians. I was intensely involved in the hobby back in college, even made it up to the WBC a few times. After several years, I pretty much abandoned playing and buying new games altogether. However, I held on to a couple dozen core titles that I couldn't bear to part with. Fast-forward seven years and I'm obsessively getting back into it. My girlfriend has a healthy enthusiasm for this stuff, too and she's doing a great job of enabling me.

Here's some stuff I like:
Fave "Euros" (in no particular order): Adel Verpflichtet, Settlers of Catan, Samurai, Traders of Genoa, Alhambra, For Sale, Wyatt Earp, Carcassonne: The Castle, Dragon's Gold, Scotland Yard/NY Chase/Etc., Silber Zwerg, D&D Lords of Waterdeep, Modern Art, Battle Line, Lost Cities, Ra, Saint Petersburg, Torres, Ricochet Robots

Fave Ameritrash (in no particular order): D&D Adventure System, Talisman, Pit, Can't Stop, Nexus Ops, Risk 2210 AD, History of the World (Hasbro AH edition), Star Wars Epic Duels, King of Tokyo, Diplomacy, Robo Rally, Merchant of Venus, Samurai Swords, Star Realms, Rush 'n' Crush, Facts in Five, Fireball Island

Games I strongly dislike: Tikal, most deck-building games (although my girlfriend and I are utterly obsessed with Star Realms), pretty much the entirety of Stefan Feld's oeuvre

Other hobbies/interests: hiking, baseball, out-of-print genre movies (particularly 80s Italian b-movies, Shaw Bros., straight-to-video slashers, etc.), listening to music (punk, new wave, "indie", southern and Bay Area hip hop, synthwave, pretentious contemporary classical), making music, reading dumb opinions on the internet.

Anyway, that's enough. Thanks for indulging my over-sharing. Howdy!

See? I've been telling you guys that this site's split personality is what makes it hum. This sonofabitch is on-balls-accurate (a technical term) and I think we should have him write the new-member intro blurb.

I haven't played Pit in decades and I'd love to get another shot at it. I recall it having a very unique dynamic.

I have never played a Stefan Feld game. TRAJAN looks nice though, I would probably try that one. Despite the name, we don't spend a lot of time categorizing games anymore, really. They are all just games, and you know what you like. I agree that the discourse is what brings me back, even if it's just dickscourse sometimes.

Tikal is my least favorite of the big canonical Kramer action point games. Granted it's been close to ten years since I last played it, but back then it felt clunky and stiff. There was a certain type of joylessly over-analytical player that gravitated toward it back then, and I hated playing with those types. So maybe it was the wrong crowd.

Glad we can defiantly stand side-by-side against the Feld incursion, however. To come back to the hobby and find my old game group overrun by lifeless, tensionless point salad exercises all designed by a guy I'd never heard of was, well, disorienting. Kind of a Marty McFly returning to a dark alternate 1985 type of disorienting. Stefan Feld is basically evil time-traveling Biff in the Casino - he's taken the Euro side of the hobby down a dark, horrible tangent that was never meant to be.

I'm sure he's a nice guy, though.

This sounds disparaging but I really mean it in total earnestness: St. Petersburg is a fine example of a certain kind of agreeably dull euro that doesn't really get made anymore. Viewed through the prism of what's transpired on the Euro side of the hobby, I'd even say it retrospectively looks like a damn classic.

Pit with the maximum number of players and lots of beer flowing around the table is a recipe for a damn good time.

That's funny that you talk about the "agreeably dull" Euro, because I think we all have those kinds of games that we like. I think mine would be Power Grid. Does that count?
