Hah. I had it at work for a bit, and a friend has referred to my office as the 'nerd-Cave'. I dwell in a cozy warehouse, tucked into a corner. I suspect I am the last person on tours (and thus not shown) because I tend to have stacks of bins of plastic parts, there are rows of shelves with more bits, my desk is covered in dice, packing material, coffee cups, stacks of cards, baggies of tokens, and the odd razorblade. It might be in my car, it might be at home, it might be out mixed up with the demo games, someone might have borrowed it...

Well, I was just noticing how much overlap there was between people's lists, but the categorization often doesn't match.

Schweig!'s got AGTFOS as one of his favorite AT games, it's one of my favorite wargames. Drmabuse and Shellhead have Mall of Horror as AT, euro for me. BradH and Southerman both like Star Wars Risk, but one's got it as a wargame, and the other as AT. Shellhead thinks Aquire is a great euro, and according to Malthus, Magic Realm is a wargame (!?).

Apart from the fact that it isn't important to me whether people replying to this thread use any form of categorization, I do think that categorization is important in a discussion of board games, just as it is with movies, music, etc.

Overlaps in categorization appear often, simply because the terms aren't really well defined. For example when I say war game, I really mean consim. So AXIS&ALLIES would be AT for me, not a war game, although it is a war game of course. MALL OF HORROR has zombies so it's likely AT, although the short play time and the game system (bidding) resembles euros.

So the problem is not the uselessness of categorization, but the absence of any clear definition of the categories.

This is sort of my point. If Mall of Horror gets the AT Seal of Approval simply because it's a zombie game, even though its mechanics are straight-up euro, then it would stand to reason that A&A would be a wargame.

Everyone has their own ad hoc criteria for grouping these games.

So the problem is not the uselessness of categorization, but the absence of any clear definition of the categories.

I didn't say categorization is useless, just that these terms pretty much are. They're helpful if you're talking about Agricola, ASL, and Talisman, not so much if you're trying to describe Twilight Struggle and War on Terror.
