Anyone picking up Tales of the Arabian Nights?

Yeah. He redid a bunch of those, adding another Eris knows how many paragraphs in the process. I think he also reworked some of the more generic sections, to trim down all those paragraphs that read "the other".
He also (I think) wrote some new stuff around Lost and Imprisoned.
When you draw a pictured place card, if you are the the correct terrain, you automatically get the pictured place.
The delay wasn't really art or printing, it was all of the reworking and rechecking of the Book of Tales.

I think he said he wrote 300 new paragraphs and added a new matrix. I think it was for jinni encounters, so that you never get a generic encounter for them anymore. Eventhough actual jinni efreet encounters are nearly always nasty, it was always disappointing when you got a jinni efreet and were expecting something cool and magical, but got something ordinary.
ETA: Increasing the chances to get the pictured place on the terrain cards is also cool.

Last edit: 16 Jun 2009 12:25 by ubarose. Reason: not jinni, it was efreet

Yeah. During play testing Zev discovered a bunch of stuff that sucked, but, as Frank said, fans of the original had just grown to accept. So Zev decided to fix it, and once you start trying to fix something as complicated as the Tales Book, it grows into a monster project. He had someone else that was working with him on it, but once Zev started tweaking, that guy was like, hey, I only signed on to edit the Book of Tales, not to rewrite the thing. So Zev ended up doing a lot of it himself.

I caved and played the WEG version for the first time last night. I was trying to avoid it because I didn't want it to swing my expectations for the new game one way or the other, but I figured the Z--Man edition is so close to being out there that I won't have time to get overly attatched to the old one.
I can already tell from that one game, though, that TotAN is destined to become my absolute favorite adventure game. Seriously, to hell the Talisman/Runebound/Arkham Horror model. This is the only adventure game I've played that feels like it actually deserves to be called an adventure game.
In that one game, I was turned into an ape, became an outlaw on the run, was ostracized for telling bullshit stories, went on a pilgramage, was rejected by a feamle genie I was trying to date, beat up an evil sorcerer, and still only got to see a fraction of what's possible in the game. Errors or no, just writing that paragraph book must have been a herculean effort. There are probably over a hundred different ways any single encounter can play out. Even though you're often just going by blind intuition in any given encounter, the structure of the game gives you a lot of direction by giving you different objectives and some mild player interaction along the way, so you'll be zig-zagging all over the eastern hemisphere on this episodic quest.
Buy this game. You will love it. That is all.

I listened to Moritz Eggert talking about Star Saga --- a computer game from the 80s with CYOA type approach. Is this alot like Tales of Arabian Nights? Anyone played both?

OK I think you guys have sold me. (How much is Zev paying you?? ) I'll have to add this to my shelf of too-infrequently-played games.
