There was an unreleased HeroQuest NES game? Apparently the music is quite popular with the chiptunes crowd.

I think I'm going to have to track down the ROM.

Awesome. Oh my god that music takes me back to sitting in my parent's basement with my Jeri-Curl, drinking a glasses of Schweppes Raspberry Ginger Ale, eating Old Dutch Tostados Jalapeno chips, listening to Purple Rain and playing marathon sessions of NES games with my brother.

You know, there were actually-released versions of both Heroquest and Space Crusade for DOS and Amiga computers. They're freeware now, I believe. You can get them from Gremlin's website.

I don't think Gremlin have a website. I've been after a copy of the HQ game for years - if you can point me at a download, I'd be very grateful.

These are the Amiga versions, but since you're going to need an emulator anyway, it doens't really matter. The site claims they're distributed with permission.

Plus, if you get an Amiga emulator, then you can play the original (read: best) versions of Rocket Ranger and It Came From the Desert, which are also free and legal to download at cinemware.com.

DOS Box

Beat me to it. Get it here: www.dosbox.com/

I use it to run the old Avalon Hill computer games [because who needs big fancy graphics when you can play Civ with 8-bit sprites!] and it works like a champ. You may have to do a little tweaking to make sure that the game doesn't run at your current processor speed [these old games will flash past your eyes and throw you into a seizure at current CPU clock speeds], but it's all pretty straightforward.

The Amiga versions are really nice looking [and have the expansion], as well as the space hulk game for Amiga too, but the Amiga emulator is a fucking pain in the ass to configure if you're not an actual Amiga junkie [i.e. German]. I consider myself reasonably skilled in the mysterious ways of getting shit to run and I can't get the Amiga ROMs to run past the splash screen on the emulator.

That's wierd. Are you using WinUAE? I have no idea what the hell I'm doing, but every game I've tried on it so far loads right up on its own after you "insert" the "floppy." I've noticed a few glitches here and there, but I find just changing random settings around eventually fixes things.

I tried the Amiga Space Hulk. It's OK I guess, but there was a CD version for DOS that had a really cool intro as well as speech.

Anyone remember the old DOS Blood Bowl? That was the first real computer game I ever played, and it was pretty cool at the time.

I had both Space Hulk games on PC - think I still do actually. Even beat every mission on the first one, though the second one I could never get past the map with the chaos marines.

Yeah I still got that one too. The big problem with it though was that all of your team members looked identicle, so it was impossible to tell your linemen from your ogres!

It still is. I love the old Cinemaware stuff.

Vengeance of the Blood Angels is bullshit. The later campaign missions are fucking impossible. Still, it was cool to see all the stuff from the board game make it in there. It's too bad we only get video game conversions of shit like SoC and Carcassonne these days.

Man, I loved heroquest. I had made my own traps and board extensions. I had even created new monsters and player characters.

I agree, great game.

Actually I still have an old PC with Win98 and DOS on it.
It's good to keep one around just in case.
