If I were to buy just one expansion for this game, which one should it be?

I know nothing about 2 & 3, but the first expansion kind of feels like stuff that should have been in the main box, so I'd get that.

The 2nd expansion comes with relics, which are basically pumped up items. Don't miss that one.

On BGG, Tom Vasel has excellent reviews all the expansions to date. I got psyched about Relics & Ruin watching his review.

They all rule pretty hard. The 2nd and 3rd one really add some new mechanics, so I'd probably suggest the 1st one 1st since you'd then have something beyond just more guys to refresh the game for you later.

But, a lot of it is really going to boil down to which encounters you personally (or as a group) have the most fun with. My personal favorites mostly come from the 2nd and 3rd. They got really comfortable with the system and have been able to come up with some mega-creative ideas. There are a handful of fan contest winners in those as well.

All in all, you can't really go wrong and if you like the game you ought eventually plan to have them all.
