One of my personal favorites is the card that allows you to exchange the position of two number chips on the board. That one can be devastating if you use it in the right situation.

Say what you want about the "Deactivate Knight -> Burn Someone Else's City" move, it's got nothing on this card.

This move WILL end marriages and is so delicious to do. Especially when you take that number you wanted at start but that someone took before you could go.

Or, alternatively, when they steal your number and then that number never comes up again.

I don't know about "got nothing" on it. The card is a random draw, you'd be stupid to not do it. This gives you a built in exscuse, whereas there is a certain intentionality about de-activating a knight that makes it especially malicious.

But both of these prove a point. The number of ways to fuck someone are increased, if not the total number of stratagies. This game is more interactive than the base game alone. Exactly what you would hope for from a title like "cities and knights".

I'm also a huge fan of the ask to trade for something, see that people have it and then play a monopoly and just take em all.

I've almost lost friends over this one.

Don't forget the opposite that works equally well - trade a bunch of one thing and then play a monopoly and take it all back. It's much harder to bluff your way out of that one.

Having a hard time looking for threads on this Catan expansion. Is this the good one? I assume so because it's the one they packaged with the 300 dollar edition. How does it make the game beter? It reads a bit like they turned up the complexity all the way to 11. The fact that some cities produce double resources and some produce commodities, depending on the tiles they are on irks me.

You're nearly as bad as Barney for sorting out AT and German/Euros :-) ... someone needs to give you a list - where are our moderators, this thread is polluting the Ameritrash forum !!

It's definitely the best expansion for the game. There is a reason it was the one included in the anniversary treasure chest set. Seafarers adds some flavor and variety, but overall it's kind of bland. That Traders & Barbarians expansion is one of those "jumping the shark" type of expansions. Cities & Knights completely transforms the game from a little abstract family game into a pretty meaty strategy game. Don't worry about it, just pick it up. You'll be glad you did.

Well, the other reason is that Cities & Knights just requires some extra cards, some flip books, and some figurines. The Seafarers set would have required an ass-load of additional 3D terrain hexes, so the wooden box would have been huge and prohibitively expensive.

But yeah, if you're going to get an expansion, get Cities and Knights.

I think Seafarers is also an essentially one. Mostly because just randomly laying out a map is alot more fun then playing with the base Hexagon Island.

You get crazy shapes and interesting games out of it.
