That's a really cool picture. Looks very Descent.

These are looking very interesting! I'll be waiting on a few reviews, and if all sounds well, I might grab a couple of copies for my class.

Cheers,

Giles.

Oooh. Pretty.

Given my dungeon crawl fixation, I'll have one as soon as it turns up.

Also, the history of D&D Boardgames is actually pretty good, in spite of what Barnes says.

1. Dragonstrike has a moderately clumsy system, but the actual adventures were a world above the bland Heroscape adventures. There are some ideas in the design itself to fix problems with heroscape----that needed a little more work.)

2. The AD&D Audio introduction sets are priceless. The adventures are actually pretty good, and the full cast audio CD's are amazing.

Practically all of the other sets were extremely RPG-centric. The two recent $25 sets with full dungeons done up in tiles, a very simple 1-2 level rulesset and the painted D&D minis are at the top of the heap. Exactly what a basic set should be.

There is also the Dragonlance boardgame---which I have sadly never played.

That's just it. If this was a generic D&D dungeon crawl boardgame, I would say it looks pretty cool. But this is supposed to Ravenloft, the legendary gothic horror D&D adventure that later got bumped up into a whole campaign setting/product line. I don't see anything gothic horror about the components. It's like a restaurant advertising spicy thai food when all they serve is bland chow mein.

I think there's another, generic D&D dungeon crawl coming out for this system.

At any rate, this looks pretty cool. No doubt it's the classic art, but I miss the old boxed set rpgs.

I've never heard of these basic sets - could you explain?

Do we have an MSRP? This looks like $60. If it were FFG, $80. But WotC, $60.

Yeah. I hope it is successful. WotC has the resources to produce high-quality games for cheaper prices. As an aside, I recommend reading The Game Makers. It is a history of Parker Brothers and it is quite interesting. It highlights both the Philosophy of the Parker Brothers (have fun), the pricing due to the economy of scale, and the sheer amounts of games they have sold of Monopoly, Sorry!, Scrabble....all the big ones.

Is anyone interested or has anyone heard anything about Dungeons of Dragonfire Mountain ? It's going to be published together with Ravenloft and both games can be combined. If I remember correctly it is more or less the same game in a fantasy setting.

As for the price: it says in the Press Release $64.99 for the Dragonfire title. I assume Ravenloft will be the same.

Edit: I just searched for the ISBN at amazon and apparently the fantasy game has a different name now: Wrath of Ashardalon , to be released 16th November and pretty cheap at the moment ($ 41). The same goes for Ravenloft, which is also $ 41 at the moment instead of $ 65. Anyone have the guts to preorder? If yes, do it via the F:AT amazon shop!

This one produced for 3.5.
www.amazon.com/Dungeons-Dragons-Basic-Ga...9443/ref=pd_sim_b_33

There are actually two versions with different minis and a different adventure

It really only contained the first two levels of characters. As a one-shot minis-heavy dungeon crawl, it was cute. Just enough plot and theme, and the components are gorgeous. It sold at TRU for under $20 as well.

I'm with Shellhead. I was expecting something with a more moody and flavorful look, but all I can see is Descent: D&D.

Wow. Not sure how I missed those the first time around. Thanks for hooking me up.

Well, I'll be a yeasayer here. The last D&D board game was pretty great, although it's been all but forgotten- I'm talking about the HEROQUEST-y UK-only one...that was a really, really well done game. Maybe this will follow suit.

I like RAVENLOFT...it's really a stupid thing, mixing fantasy with gothic horror, but hell, why not. I'll give this one the benefit of a doubt.

That is a lot of text on those cards...it looks like some of it might be story. But here's the thing- would you rather have the text on the card, or an icon that maps to the same text stuck on a reference sheet or in a rulebook?

I own the D&D Fantasy Adventure Board Game, had to import it, cost me 60 bones, and you're right, it is the King Shit. Only Dungeony game that's better is Warhammer Quest, I reckon. Maybe I'll do a nice review to help people decide on this one, since they look to be cut in the same vein...
