Titan Strategy: The masterboard

This has been a big week of game playing for me and unfortunately I was defeated in a game of "Titan"

I feel like I am missing some strategic element in the masterboard, can someone give me any tips or strategy?

Thanks from a recently fallen Titan!

Depends on the makeup of your stack. I have three of factors I look at when I am deciding masterboard strategy. First, you want jungle/brush stacks in the ditch around the outside of the board because more of those types hit out there. For those stacks to remain viable, they need to hit jungle frequently. Likewise, you want the non-green stacks in the daisy chain (the inner circle). They hit more often there plus they can benefit from going into the mountains/tundra later. Second, you want to look at how diverse your stacks are. If you have a stack with nothing but one type of creature, your goal should be to move to the one place it can recruit or try to get to a place where you will be more likely to roll that one place next turn. Any other possible moves should be analyzed with that in mind. I see too many new players with a stack of behemoths running all over the board when they should be trying to get into position for a serpent. Of course, if your stack is diverse and you have a lot of different stuff in there, you can probably just keep moving and recruiting until clever stack division leaves you with several non-diverse stacks. Third, watch what your opponents are recruiting so that you don't recruit obsolete stuff or leave yourself in a position where your weaker stacks will become fodder when they should have been growing.

Of course, there is a lot more to it than that, and it all depends on your initial splits. These are just some very general principles...

You might find some helpful stuff here:
www.desjardins.org/titan/strategy.txt

Masterboard strategy is difficult to grasp for new players. Although that said, after thirty or so games it's actual battleboard tactics I find looses me most games, not mistakes on the masterboard.

I just want to hop in here with a "Hell yeah." I've been playing Colossus (by myself, sadly) almost nightly in my anticipation of Titan arriving some month. And I was just getting the shit kicked out of me on the Masterboard. I play a little more patiently now, I "aim" for the terrain I want for proper mustering, etc. I was actually not the first player eliminated last night! My battleboard tactics are PISSPOOR, and this is my next hurdle.

Great thread.

Hmm. This thread has made me want to play some Titan.

Anyone up for a F:AT invitational PBEM game over ACTS? The interface there tracks all the stacks, positions, moves, combats etc etc so no need for annoying file swapping!

Sign up here with you ACTS username and I'll kick off a game.

Have you seen this? http://boardgamegeek.com/image/327018 That is moving. That can move a man to tears. Now I've never played Titan, but to see a board game company care that much about how the game is stored is incredible. You see that Days of Wonder? You see that? Now look at your half-assed insert for BattleLore.

Excellent. I'll leave it a little longer, see if anyone else wants to join, then kick the game off.

Well, the ACTS system is a bit obtuse anyway. So I suggest we make this a "newbie game" and I'll answer any questions about the interface as they come up.

Grab a copy of the Titan rules and learn 'em. They're actually fairly straightforward and ACTS should stop you making really gross errors in game play anyway.

You can get an ACTS account here:
acts.warhorsesim.com
Then let me know your username.

Anyone else on for the ride? There's room for two more ..

Cheers,
Matt

Nice!

Cheers Matt.

I'm off to work, so if I can't set up an account tonight I'll do it tomorrow.

I'll get started on the titan rules right away.
