Any 'Low Fantasy' boardgames?

Being my preferred flavor of fantasy, but I don't see too many titles in the 'low fantasy' style.

Talisman, Descent, DQ, Defenders of the Realm, Warhammer, etc are all pretty high fantasy.

Anyone have any suggestions?

What do you mean by "low fantasy" like swords and sandals type of stuff like Conan?

Good question.

Yes, swords and sorcery is generally considered low fantasy. However, I'd prefer more medieval (like Fhard and the Grey Mouser) rather than bare-chested (Conan).

A Game of Thrones, Battles of Westeros. You don't need to be familiar with the books, they're both good games.

I knew this series of games were going to be brought up. Not disregarding them, but any others?

Swords-and-Sorcery stuff is NOT low fantasy. Conan was always fighting wizards, ancient gods, shapechanging demons, etc etc. Low fantasy is characterized by the absence (or at least de-emphasis) of magic, plotlines that tend to be more modestly-scaled than epic, and characters that are more human than super-human.

I can think of very few games that would qualify.

The original DungeonQuest - or at least the Swedish/Danish version - was very low fantasy. I don't think it had a single magical item in it for instance.

I'm going to go old school with a designer since reviled around here

Steve Jackson Melee

can't think of any others off the top of my head and don't think there are any better. TOS has some redesigns listed.

The Warhammer free Pit Fighter game has no magic. (Warhammer itself is somewhat low fantasy if you stick with humans.) The old SPI Arena of Blood (very Melee-like).

Barbarian Kings as a multiplayer wargame---with just a touch of magic.

Arena of Death has no magic (you can add it if you get the DragonQuest RPG system). And, it isn't very epic as it is just a battle in an Arena.

Divine Right had wizards and such, but I don't recall magic itself playing a huge role.

Would Warrior Knights qualify?

And, since you mentioned Fafhrd and the Mouser, there's always Lankhmar itself, published by TSR in 1976 (but not recommended).
