New Memoir Map Goes Deep

Memoir's D-Day Anniversary release is a set of maps to play D-Day out on. Of note is their deeper shape and the potential to change the fundamentals of the game:

There's new rules for them too. They seem to be an attempt to sim F-4 -- Find, Fix, Flank, Finish -- and there's significant room to manage retreat and regroup.

I've played Battle Cry on a 2x3 grid of maps (all the old version which was a pretty impressive display of hard-to-find as it was before the reprint) and it was very effective at what it did with just a few minor rule changes.

Is anyone here still doing Memoir? I'll be honest, I just have the base game and it still has plenty of play in it.

Been thinking of picking up Memoir again, but haven't played it in years.

I haven't played it in a while, but my bro's a pretty big fan and has most of the stuff (once). He went to this camping con we have in Québec last week (from Wednesday evening to Sunday afternoon, players sleep on site, when they do - first time he did it he went sleepless two nights in a row!) and they did the D-Day, 10 player on 3 maps.

This new 6 map thing apparently requires quite a few copies of some expansions, not to mention the base game.

This is exactly why M44 is awesome...

Yeah, if they're not careful this is going to turn into a legit wargame.

If I was still playing wargames regularly, I'd be pissed that I sold my M'44 collection 6 years ago.

I was lucky enough to find a brilliant opponent in my own neighborhood and we've been playing the hell out of Memoir for almost two years now, having logged 70+ games and going strong. I was (and still am) amazed at how much this game has to offer once you get past the "it's pure luck" and "always play your best card" fallacies. There's so much variety in scenarios and modes of play one would be truly hard-pressed to wear it out.

Campaign mode is the ultimate way to go, playing 4-5 historically linked scenarios as a single side, then flipping sides to play through again, comparing total medals at the end to see who won. (Or using the fantastic Campaign Books.)

Needless to say, we can't wait to get our hands on the new maps...

The Breakthrough maps were like this several years ago and made the game even more tedious. They stretch the game length out as you spend more turns advancing forward than in standard M44.

And these maps look to be similar, but also require that equipment pack as well adding quite a bit to the cost, but doubtful to the fun.

I would suggest against investing in this line. Going to get a poor ROI.

Recommended alternative? I've always found Memoir to be on the short side.

I will admit that the game is a lifestyle choice. Days of Wonder at their marketing best, and that's saying something.

For M44?

I'm not a fan of the C&C system, but use to have a ton of M'44. The campaign books were hands down the best supplement. Conflicts maintained the close proximity set-ups, the games played quickly and with the results carrying over to the next match each game carried a bit more 'gravitas' as it were. Also, you didn't _need_ too many expansions. The terrain pack was necessary if you wanted to run all of the campaigns, but we got plenty of repeated campaign plays with just the base and maybe russia and japan (if you didn't want to proxy figs).

Did they ever release a revised, consolidated rulebook?

This. I do like the C&C system and have played a ton of C&C:A and C&C:N but I still think the Eastern Front campaign is the very best way to experience the system. Shame it needs the base game, campaign book and two more expansions (ideally three) to get the most out of.

I love the first scenario in the Eastern expansion - the one with Finland's ski troops. That scenario is crazy assymetrical yet still feels balanced win-percentage wise.

That one was my favourite M'44 scenario as well.
