Kingdom Builder!

Alright, who wants to play some Kingdom Builder!

It's the hot new game from Donald X. Vaccarino, the guy that did Dominion...which was also...a game about building a kingdom...that wasn't called Kingdom Builder...ok.

I have no idea if the game will be good or not, but Kingdom Builder? What a TERRIBLE title! It's so on-the-nose it's almost a joke title. It's like Renaissance Trader, Puerto Rican Slavemaster, or Fantasy Roleplaying Game. I guess it's good for the right brain nerdlingers that dig the really bland Eurogames...the ones that would probably prefer games with titles that don't titillate with exotic place names or neologisms.

Literally zero imagination...but I don't know what's worse, this or back when all Eurogames had to have titles that ended in -a or -ia.

And it does beg the question...who would win in a fight, Master Builder or Kingdom Builder?

I saw this over at the Queen Games page when looking for pictures for my LANCASTER review (hey! a European city! It'll blow their fucking miiiiinnnndzzzz). I cracked up when I saw it. KINGDOM BUILDER. I can't wait for KINGDOM BUILDER EXPANSION.

It's like the TOTALLY RENAMED SPY GAME without intent.

Dominion was originally Castle Builder, so at least they stopped bothering to pretend it has a theme.

I had the exact same reaction when I heard about the game "Merchants of the Middle Ages." It was like...really? That's the name you went with? Can you get more f'n generic?

Well, looks like you can, lol.

GAME

I wouldn't totally write it off just yet. I actually like abstracts (unlike many around here) and don't have a problem with it (I see these types of Euro's as abstracts of a sort).

However I find it highly unlikely that he has struck gold twice. Dominion is an excellent game, very good at doing what it does, whether or not you personally can appreciate that. Yes, I prefer other deckbuilders but I wouldn't call Dominion bad by any means.

The title is stupid.. yes, but that doesn't bother so much as a dumb game. Can he do it again... who knows?

How can a game called "Lancaster" be about building a city? It should be about destroying cities with four engine bombers that had bombs called "blockbusters". Sheesh. That's almost as bad as a game called "Barabarossa" being about building little models out of clay (although that sounds pretty cool). Next you'll tell me that "Hornet" isn't about the carrier that held the line for a little bit during World War II.

I thought Lancaster was about raising an Amish Barn.

Interesting that he removed deck building from Kingdom Builder.

It'll probably suck unless Dale and Valerie come down from the mountain to offer their input.

OK, sarcasm over. Read a post by Donald X about the game over at TOS. He said he expected Queen to rename it and was surprised that they didn't. Oops.

Seriously though, that's a terrible name. But the game itself might be pretty solid. Dominion hasn't really run out of gas after how many expansions. We'll see if he knows how to design a bigger design.

Isn't SAN JUAN a deck building game? Why is everyone so crazy for this?

Anyway, if you would only read my unfinished, unpublished review of LANCASTER, you would see that it's not about building a city, but rather, gathering VPs.

Will they be reprinting it as "VP Gatherer"?
