New Star Trek

New Star Trek was created by Ska_baron
Okay, I've always abided by the idea that you can only be a true fan of either Star Wars or Star Trek. All my life. Never really touched the Trek stuff. It was beneath me. The shows just seemed so BORING and soap opera like.

Now, I've seen the trailer for this new fangled reboot (or is it just a continuation?) of Star Trek and I must say that it looked pretty friggin good. INTERESTING, even! This is not settling well with my Star Wars heritage which was shaken by the last three movies set in that universe.

So. Convince me to see it or to skip it. Wife said she'd see it with me, but I hate dragging her to something like that if *I* am on the fence about it. Rather save that card for a good movie - like I did with Watchmen.

Sorry, but that's a ridiculous idea... There's plenty of room in most people's brains for true "fandom" of both entities.

As far as the movie, yeah, it looks cool. I don't know that I'll see it in the theater, but I definitely want to see it on DVD, at least. ST movies (and series) have been very much hit and miss (Star Wars, too, of course). First Contact was the best movie, I think. And Deep Space Nine was, IMO, the best series.

I've been watching the new Clone Wars animated series with my kids and it's pretty doggone good considering the target audience. It's reestablished my faith in the Star Wars saga again.

The trick is to not watch any of the George Lucas stuff in the meantime. Since when did they give creative control to THAT guy for Star Wars?

Sag.

I've never really considered myself a "true" fan of either one. I was really into Star Wars when I was younger, but that had a lot to do with the fact that the special editions all the attendant merchandise were coming out back then, so it felt new to me.

The original Star Trek I always ignored because it was so old and cheese-y. Now that I'm older, I can enjoy it despite its datedness. It's a pretty entertaining space adventure show. The new movie looks a little too action/special effects-y for what I imagine when I think of Star Trek, but it looks like fun. I'll probably see it if I can get anyone else to go with me.

First Contact was the best movie, I think.

Dude, nuh-uh. Star Trek IV. C'mon, "nuclear wessels," "double dumbass on you"? Classic.

It's possible to be a fan of both Wars and Trek. Totally.

I think you're confused with those guys who fucking get married in Starfleet uniforms or some shit. They're not fans of anything else because they don't have time--they're too busy learning Klingon and committing to memory what episode number that Uhurha wore a different uniform for the first time or something.

And Khan is the best Trek film. This isn't even open for discussion. IV is fun but silly, and VIII is great action porn but not in the same league as Khan.

Nah, "KHAAAAAAN" is the best.

The trailer made the film look bloated and cliched. Pearl Harbor or Armageddon or something. And who is playing Kirk? Looks like some pretty lady boy. I'll go and see it anyway. Maybe it will be better than it looks.

Yeah, I know it's not one or the other. I just like the nerd fights that ensue when one tries to explain why one is cooler or better. Hilarious!

Still I immediately liked Wars and never really "got" Trek. Too adult I guess.

I like the "bloated" look. Looks shiny and new! Plus the Enterprise is like dodgin and weavin through stuff - not just WARP DRIVE ENGAGED blue lights.

Eh, still pretty meh. Doubt I'll go, but maybe catch on DVD/TV.

So is the naming of the Mutant Chronicles film just coincidence? Hadn't heard of it before.

Ahhh! Its the current trend in Holly wood to feminize the men. I got $10 that says there is some female character in that movie that puts both Spock and Kirk in his place!

Remember that in Original Trek , Kirk is a ladies man and by today's standards sexist, so the movie should be consistant in showing us the developement of Kirk along those lines!

Also, I agree that Khan is the best movies and "Trekies" in uniform are no lifers in the same way that "Twilight Imperium" players are no lifers! :)

Why do they have to be consistent in anything? This Enterprise looks nothing like the Enterprise in the original series. If anything it looks closer to the Enterprise in the first movie.

This reminds me I have been meaning to go out and get the original series on DVD.

I think it would be great if they had Kirk as the 1960s ladies man. It would give him a ton of character and I think people are way past getting touchy about that in a film.
