Saw it last night at the Drafthouse.
While I wouldn't call it a great movie, it was a breath of fresh air. The pace of the film reminded me of the old fashioned classics and not these loud ritche/bruckheimer type films we're subjected too all the time by Hollywood. I also liked the fact that everyone in the film was just plain looking. Even compared to some more recent westerns like 3:10 to Yuma where the actors have rugged good looks and 5 o'clock shadows, the characters in Appaloosa appeared very average looking. Maybe it has to do with everyone besides Viggio being an older actor. I suppose Harris could have gone for younger stars, but this cast really clicked.
I agree about the Hitch perspective. He's really the star of the movie, but at the beginning you think Cole is. It isn't til a bit into it that you realize that even though he's the side-kick, it's his story.
Very enjoyable movie and I would recommend it. I'll probably pick it up on dvd.
"Damn, everyone can shoot..." - great line
Also, I saw that there's a movie about Darby Crash out/coming out. I think I'll check it out, but the trailer leads you to believe he created punk rock. A bit misleading...
