This and Fireball Island are basically the last of my thrift store "holy grails"--never even got a sniff of either one.

There's a geeklist (several probably) floating around BGG on "common games that have similar or the same parts as impossibly rare birds" (e.g., the 1970 edition of Careers, a thrift staple, uses the *exact* same pawns, down to the mold lines, as Avalon Hill's Rail Baron) Check there--and throw up a request if need be--to see if those derricks show up anywhere else.

For the wildcat cards, I'd go immediately to Artscow and gin myself up a deck. :)

Fuck me! I thought this thing would be floating around. If Dogmatix has never seen it, I don't stand a chance.

This sucker can sell for hundreds big money when complete, and you'll often see incomplete copies being parted out on ebay; it's just one of those games... Fireball Island is another just like that... Dark Tower, I understand, since it used extremely unique (and, in the case of the Tower itself, fragile) bits and the whole lawsuit thing both gave it notoriety and severely limited the numbers for a mass market release. These two, I don't quite understand because, though they're both really good games, they seemed like they were more readily available.

But, nope, not a sniff...

I still remember the copy of King Oil I passed up on (for $3!!!) a couple years ago before I knew it was a good game. I still see it when I close my eyes at night after a fruitless day of thrifting (which is almost every day around here...).

Anyway, I found a copy for $5 and I recently bought a deck of the Wildcat cards off eBay to complete my set. I'm only missing two cards so you can have the leftovers, if you're interested.

I finally picked up a used complete copy from ebay three or four years ago. I think I got it for around $35. It was one of those items from childhood that I'd played a variety of times but never actually owned.

Whoops. I absolutely confused this one in my head with Crude [McMulti] when it came to absurd secondary market price (looking forward to Stronghold's reprint of this one, for sure). However, $50+ isn't uncommon, which is why thrifters love finding copies; it's still a high-margin seller. Still a pretty good deal nonetheless. (However Fireball Island is still a megamoney find ;) )

Not to derail the thread but I played a game described as King Oil meets Code 777. It is called I9N. The object is to find the one oil well that goes the depeest. It was a fun game with interesting mechanics.

There used to be a web site that solely sold board game spare parts but I can't find it now to save my life. But if it's just cards you're missing buy a cheap box of opaque sleeves and roll your own.
