Hirst Arts Wiz-War Boards... any interest?

I've been working on making my second set of Wiz-War board from Hirst Arts blocks. But this time the sector tiles are cast as a single piece to reduce the amount of assembly work to nothing in order to play (other than placing walls at the beginning of the game).

Here is some info detailing the process

After buying my resin in moderate amounts of bulk (gallon containers), I sat down to calculate exactly how much resin it takes to make each cast and I beleive I can get the material cost in resin (including all walls, chests, created walls, sealed doors, portals) to $30 or less per player board. So $120 for a 4 player setup. Hopefully I can shave this down to $100 somehow.

Considering how much I have seen those who sell kits made from castings in plaster, I am wondering if others find this reasonable to spend on a resin board game replacement that requires no assembly in order to play?
Naloomis workshop (not even sure the guy is still in business) charges $20 per board. Unassembled. Made out of plaster. Or $30 out of better plaster.

If there seems to be enough legitimate interest, I'll contact Bruce Hirst and get a legit license to produce and sell them. He has a very straightforward and easy to licensing agreement. I dont want to charge much above what it costs in materials to produce them. I just want to recoup the costs to build my own board.

That looks stellar and would work great with the PnP version I'm planning on doing this winter, bit unfortunately I have a really hard time dropping 3 digits on Wiz War.

Very, very cool though.

I could see this happening with Space Hulk, which has more rabid, spendthrift fans than Whiz-war.

I have no money for such things, but that's fucking awesome!

Thats awesome. If you want to experiment, you can add fillers to resin to extend its life and give it other properties. Also, maybe save money.

www.smooth-on.com/faq_display.php?faq_id=2

I've used tin powder (primarily because I can get a couple of pounds free if its at my shop) and other powders like CaCO3' which is dirt fucking cheap and made 1 gallon of resin extend to almost 1.5 (didnt want to overdo it!) with no discernible structural integrity or bonding problems. Might make the whole concept a bit cheaper, and if you use a non toxic, nonreactive metal with a high to medium density, you also get some heft from it. If you can find cheap iron or stainless steel dust, it also gains the ability to have magnetic based figures not shift around on it.

if I had wiz-war I'd totaly do this.

I forgot all about resin fillers, Pete. Thanks for reminding me. I use the microbead stuff alot, though oddly only as hyperrealistic snow basing for miniatures.

I also like the ferrous suggestion. I was going to manually try adding holes for magnets on the board and the walls, but the added technical difficulty (ensuring each magnet is centered properly so that pieces fit as they should) would overwhelm me and make me tire of the project. Ill give the ferrous coating a shot and see how they fare to wear.

Since the real need for magnetization is the outer walls to keep them from tumbling during use, another idea would be to just submerge a strip of steel 1/4th inch wide by 1/8th inch thick along the perimeter of the mold before pouring resin.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. It's been constructive.

Beware pure Fe powder - remember that the resin will react to it and you will get rust. That's why I mentioned stainless dust.

Freakin' Amazing! Work well done! Although I bet hard-core Wiz-War fans willing to spend this amount of money is small, they probably exist. I'd be one of 'em, and buy a set from your hands - but my wife would certainly castrate me. No 'wall of earth' counter for me on that kind of spousal aggression...

Its all good feedback. I'm sure there is a market for it as well, but as remarked, since wiz-wars popularity isn't very high compared to games like space hulk, the demand would be exponentially lower. I'm sure if I made 1 or 2 extra sets that they would sell on ebay eventually.
