I spent the evening drinking large glasses of Earth's Coldest Beer.

I also played Marvel Dice Masters . Super Happy Fun Time!

The game is just a hell of a good time.

Now I want to get more boosters. Too bad some of the new Uncanny Xmen dice are different colors than my Xmen vs Avengers dice. And the new color choices are usually worse/harder to read.

I'm looking forward to playing it again. Like right now.

Played Imperial Assault with my son, who is six, today. Not in any recognisable form, no rules :) We punched the tiles, my son made an Empire base, I built what looked like a rebel cave. At first, things were antagonistic. I generally don't want my son to play shooting games, other than cops & robbers type kids games, so we established all the weapons were at worst sleeping or stun guns. Second there was very little using them. Third, my son eventually sent over a 'good' stormptooper called Jon who broke the ice, asking Luke and the female Jedi (who we called Elizabeth) if they wanted to be friends. Before I knew it, all the empire guys including Vader had come over to the cave for a party. The ST-AT 'cranked out' Call Me Maybe and Firecracker and everybody danced for a while. After that my son played for a while, making some adventures of his own. Whatever the games failings, if there are are any, I know he'll get a kick out of this for years :)

this sounds like a great fucking game, I love that Vader is down for some parteh!

this just reminds me why do people bother with stuff like boxed games though, just buy a bag of star wars minis for a few dollars, fold out those paper maps, draw your own shit, make your own dumb ass rules with a d6. Let the kids do what they want. For the Win. I do feel like this is the big Emperors New Clothes issues in these kinds of games, boxing it up, fixing up a rigid rule set and making it a milking cow franchise. Its the exact opposite of what you need to be doing with those kinds of games. Your kids will love you for the home brew partay variant dude, the plus point of SW minis is they are prepainted and cheap as crap.

Truth be told, that's probably how we all should be playing games. Epic!

I let the kids go off the script like that myself...we were playing Hey That's My Fish last night and they decided that one of the red penguins (the one hollering "noooooo") had to be saved and if he was on a piece alone we (and I quote) "have to put the game away because we all will lose."

So it turned into this co-op thing, trying to keep it from being separated the other tiles. Sure, why not.

I always make them come up with a story and goals for Heroscape.

Listen, you let those little snot nosed five year olds' imaginations run wild and play foot loose and fancy free with the rules, getting them to learn how to play Peurto Rico the right way when they are six is going to be a lot tougher.

That's exactly right. Next thing you know they will be using their imaginations instead of calculating the numbers.

My gaming life as a little kid was dominated by Monopoly which we always quit after several days; and spades with my sister, dad, and grandpa. I think I never really associated gaming with storytelling. Gaming was always a numbers thing usually with a deck of cards, while stories were for books, which was probably why I never really got into non-video game RPGs.

I played Flash Duel last night. Brought it out because a friend who plays a lot of video game fighting games was over. Had only played it once years back, but realize I should probably play it a bit more. Though it definitely feels like a game that requires a lot of plays to really win with comprehension.

Also, played Red Dragon Inn 2 last week for the first time. I enjoyed it, but I wanted a little more theme/mechanics connection. People had suggested I play it because my upcoming game has a strong theme/mechanics thing and also poker-ish themes. I did like RDI, but almost felt like it was made by people who don't drink themselves.

King of New York: 6p, and four of us died very early, so it became a 2p game, essentially. But it was still fun to watch, and about as epic as a 2p conflict could be.

Red7: I love this little card game. I'm not sure how much actual thought there is, even with the advanced rules, but it feels like there are some good moves to make to set yourself up better to stay in the round. In any case, I would describe this as Uno for grown-ups, but if Uno was actually any good.

Run, Fight or Die: This is a Launius zombie-themed dice game. I played it solo a few times a while back, and thought it was okaaaaay, but our 4p game wasn't great and showed a lot of the weakness in the game, IMO. It feels like there's not a lot you can do to affect things, especially with only 5 dice and little or no control. I drew a Follower on my first turn that took away one of my dice, permanently (I was able to get rid of him later with a card effect, but you can't voluntarily get rid of followers, which I hated). I feel like a simple way to improve the game would be to just add another die, so everyone has six instead of five (and maybe that sixth die is a custom one for each character). Sure, it would make it easier to do things, but inasmuch as it's competitive, anyway, who cares? If it's easier for everyone, then it's still balanced in that sense, but at least you'd feel like you have a little more choice and control over things with more dice.

There's an event die that everyone rolls at the beginning of their turn, and it is so swingy... most things do something a little bit bad, but some are good and even give you a nice reprieve from adding any new zombies at the end of your turn. I ended up getting super lucky and almost always rolling the good things, while other guys consistently rolled the bad ones. How is that fair or fun? I would say just make them all bad.

And also, for what appears to be a very light zombie-themed dice game, two of the dice sides have a chart with various different things. One die with a Book icon means this... Two means this or this or this... Three means this or this or this... It's not ultimately that big of a deal, but it's also not something you're going to memorize or that feels simple but inspired like say, King of Tokyo/NY or D-Day Dice.

Some aspects of the game are fun. I like the locations and the idea of the followers (if you could just choose to lose them voluntarily, even at a penalty), and how the zombies encroach on you feels fun. But this feels like it's just short of being great, where some more development and tweaking might have helped.

Played some Firefly. It is an inferior game to MoV, and it's similar enough in some respects to make me feel like comparing them. The advantage is that it does have more flavor and narrative, so it's not like it's fired or anything. I'll be keeping it.

Listen, I was one of the people that was all confused Jackie Chan .gif about it. I played a friend's copy two player with him and was really impressed with the design. It's definitely an Arkham Horror game, but it is highly refined and streamlined. Yet it doesn't lose all that much, and it actually gains some finer, more meaningful detail. For example, there's no longer money, but now when you cast a spell there might be consequences other than success/fail. The globetrotting scale makes it feel like the stakes are way higher and you spend more time playing than in administrative busywork.

Great stuff- it has more or less salvaged AH from total obsolescence.
