Couple of games of Robinson Crusoe. We played Swiss Family Robinson, we got beat in the first game and then my wife was fired up and wanted to play again. So we played the scenario again and actually won! Only with the dog AND Friday, of course, but it was a red letter day.

I love the Family Robinson scenario. It actually gives the game some room to breath and demands that you really build up your settlement. You get to build a lot of the inventions and then lean into them for a few turns to help you out.

Still a top 5 game for me.

I often think about doing preorders for my cast offs...

I doubt it will stick around but you never know. It better be damn good if it plans on staying on my shelf...and competing with my other minis games for time and attention.

What BOARD GAME(s) have you been playing? 25 Mar 2017 20:58 #245624

Played a boardgame, for the first time in a couple of months!

1989 Dawn of Freedom - Card driven games that hang most of their narrative on the event cards only really work if you are invested in those events. This is what I learned from 1989. It was fine but it felt very mechanical and numbersy in my mind as three old dudes and a news paper on a card about bulgaria didn't really connect with me. It works in Twilight Struggle and Labyrinth because those are narratives I am familiar with. I have no idea why Tienanmen square is in the game and the struggle card mini battle game is not great.

imo play Wir Sind Das Volk instead. Same topic but a much more engaging game for someone with casual interest in this bit of history. The capitalist vs socialist factory economic battle is much easier to understand as a narrative than obscure event cards. Its also much shorter than 1989.

Star Trek Fleet Captains showed up. My wife has a friend who is huge in to Trek and her husband refuses to play games with her. The game suffers greatly, for me, as a Clix game. I can't stand picking each ship up, taking off my glasses, squinting at the numbers, and trying to turn the damn base. It doesn't help that the ships are so similar and the you cant tell at a glance which ship is which. I like the adventure aspect, with the encounters, but I didn't really care what my opponent, my son, was doing. He just massed three of his ships and flew them around chanting 'Death Fleet.' The Star Trek Adventure game has all of the encounter fun. If the ships were easier to tell apart, and you didn't have to mess with the fucking clix, then this would be an ok game.

More normal Mage Knight also, after all the Star Trek:Mage Knight last week. The Star Trek version is more intuitive and plays faster, but the spells in the original game are more fun. I feel beat to death after playing Mage Knight, but also almost certainly had some great amazing highs. The Star Trek version doesn't make me feel like I was on a forced march, but doesn't really provide the extreme highs of the original.

I finally got in a decent game. I played Zimby Mojo with the surly 17-year-old who got so into the game that he forgot to be sarcastic. My friend from work read the rules and taught us the game. We were late starting [see picture], so we had to call it before the final turn because he was tired from cancer and his wife returned home, but my son had built up a huge zimby army and the other two players were recovering after a play for the crown, so it looked like he would have one. First game, three players, three hours. This one's a keeper.

This caused a traffic detour.

Almost at the end of the game. My son also employed two zombies, who were like little Jihadist extremist. You think they're working for you, but then they attack everything in sight.

Last night's game night started with a 3 player game of some Kickstarter card game called Cthulhu: Great Old Ones. You make pairs of Lovecraftian places, monsters, characters, etc. Decent artwork and nice production values, but there is very little game here.

Then was a 4 player session of my latest prototype, which is a card game with some light deck-building mechanics, but they aren't too overt. It went really well. I lost badly on account of not playing my class.

We finished the night with Doom. Two marines, with their super-power cards. I think the Invader has no chance without 4 actual marines on the board. The lesser marine count "buffs" are just too much to deal with. They walked all over me until the very last 2 rounds, in which I got 2 frags. So they won the game and I only got 1/3 of the way to victory. Still, it's okay, because it was fun for the entire time. I certainly don't mind getting my ass beat if the game is fun. But I think in the future I will endeavor to not play that game without 4 marines.

Finished up the first adventure of Silver Tower. The boss fight was out-of-control nasty, as we elected to take a special monster when that was an option from our roll on Encounter Table C. We got the Great Exalted Flamer of Tzeentch, and he summoned some additional monsters during the fight. Random events also got us a Grot Scuttling who stunned the whole party, and a pissed off Ogroid Thaumaturge. Because we want to use a variety of champions over the course of the campaign, we are playing that champions that get taken out are just dead, and get replaced in the next respite, so this fight cost us the Warpriest and his Glyphhound, as well as the Tenebrael Shard. We might have had a TPK if not for my barbarian using a Stone to Flesh scroll to take out four opponents in one round. We will soldier on next time with the Darkoath barbarian guy and the Dwarf with the fancy rune gimmick, plus two fresh champions.

Bryce, with ST:FC, just sleeve the ship cards and use paper clips to mark the power allocation. The bases sound like a good idea but practically speaking are a mess--fragile and fiddly. I'd like to play more ST:FC, and I probably should, but it's just a bit messier than I'd like, I suppose.

I'm not sure, as a non-WH40K guy, that I can explain the raison d'etre of Forbidden Stars, which, admittedly, I only played a few rounds of owing to a hard cap on time and some slow play. It's ... "fine"? I get that the WH40K elements are called out in factions, in ship models, in card flavor, etc., so it could just be me and my lack of familiarity with that theme. Or maybe it's just me and latter-day FFG ("FFG"?), because I've spent a lot of time thinking about which prior games this borrows mechanics from ("it's like Rebellion minus leaders with Fury of Dracula 3e's combat bolted on!") and some time thinking about whether this game isn't the Ameritrash equivalent of a pasted-on-theme Euro, wherein battles must be waged not to control space, establish a position, or defeat an enemy per se but rather (apparently?) to achieve the short-term tactical gains of obtaining (but not "holding") objective tokens. I will say the combat's better than Rebellion's, but it still feels oversaturated.

Also played a 3p game of Village, which I still quite enjoy despite it making few demands.

Yeah, I gather that's the true predecessor. IDK. I do think it's partly me and that another 3-4 hour FFG middling-complex pastiche isn't what I want to do so much anymore, which is why I'm sort of drifting back to middleweight Euros, including older ones such as Power Grid and newer ones such as Anachrony. It's also that we had a limited amount of time and a fair bit of AP from some of the players. I will say that FS's Learn to Play book is one of the best ones I've seen from FFG.
