Going to get a $200 Kallax for an upcoming wedding gift. Two close friends from college are getting married in October and I like to do more specific, fun gifts than what is on the registry. I did double-check with them to make sure they would want it just in case. Nearest IKEA is in Columbus, so I might try to find a spot nearby that sells older board games to try and find something obscure and cool, treat myself.

My newly acquired game has never been played. Someone unboxed it, maybe read the rules once and sold it off for a fiver.
The golden age of boardgaming has passed, some people will play games for years now before they encounter one of the great old ones. Well, I have the perfect gift for at least two dudes who will turn 50 soon.

My favorite game store in Columbus is the Guard Tower.

A friend of mine had one and I have to say, it was really convenient. The top was plexiglass, supports were carved cedar. (Not that there's anything wrong with soda cans and plywood.)
But it was great: keeps the game away from potential spills, or for RPGs, keeps minis and battle maps up while your character sheet is underneath. It's a very easy way to increase the effective surface area for gaming without needing a bigger table.
Not worth paying a premium for it, but I strongly endorse the concept.

I also picked up Star Trek Away Missions, which also seems like it will be fun. I am trying to tame the spending, but told myself I would get it if my flgs had it. I like supporting the guy, he’s a friend and is in his 44th year of business (likely his last). He had it, so I got it and the expansions.

One day, I might have to get Cave Evil, Cryptid Explorers, or even Core Space because of Charlie. So this will be the test to see how I feel about some of these games.
