Looking at the History Channel website, it looks like the series doesn't premiere until 02/12...tomorrow.
When this thread kicked off I thought this was about a different show. Once I realized it was an altogether different show, I should have clarified what I was talking about. My bad there. Anyway, what I was watching wasn't Full Metal Jousting; rather, it was a show called "Knights of Mayhem." In KoM, a National Geographic network crew was basically embedded in an actual national jousting troupe [for lack of a better word for 'em] as they trained, prepared, and competed/performed at various shows over the course of a "season."
I didn't look too far into the backstory, but FMJ sure looks very much like History piggy-backed on the interest in KoM by enlisting a couple of top trainers/guys with a long history in the sport and recruited a number of guys who regularly perform in order to create a sort of gameshow in a similar vein to the sniper/shooting competition History airs called Top Shot. KoM, on the other hand, was more of a documentary-type "reality show" (there's no underlying "game" that underpins crap like Survivor; it's driven by the overall group dynamic and the preparation and internal competition to make the roster to actually compete/perform in one of the tournaments.)
Why is this on something called the History Channel?
Since there are many medieval festivals in Germany, some also have jousting tournaments. But these are staged, with the good knight usually beating the black knight in the finale, the knights are actually stunt men and I don't think they take themselves so seriously or brag about it. I never understood this about Wrestling either. Are there sexual undertones I'm not picking up, that make these shows interesting?
