So have any F:ATties actually seen this movie? I know the book is popular with a bunch of users here so I'd like to hear your opinions on it if possible.

Haven't seen it. I heard the score is obtrusive in parts. I heard also that is does a solid job of conveying the world post-whatever-the-fuck-happened--this is not a happy post-apocalyptic movie a la 2012 or THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. Life is reduced to what Hobbes describes in the end "the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short."

Are you a father? This makes it tougher.

I saw it. It was a very well done adaptation. It was as close to the book as you could get without Morgan Freeman reading it word for word in voice over. Eerie, bleak, depressing, and scary. Great film.

Its the one time where its a toss up to either read and not watch, or watch and not read.

As a matter of fact I just went and saw The Book of Eli and as a comparison I liked both for very different reasons.

The whole genre just fascinates me.

The book is really depressing, so if the film is likewise plan for something happy to do afterwards.

My wife has always been a bit too paranoid about the apocalypse coming, so has always had plans in the back of her head about how she was going to survive and develop her secure enclave. She read 'The Road' and stopped doing this lifelong habit (well for the last 6 months or so she has), because for the first time in her her life she questioned why on earth would you want to live a post-apocalyptic world, when death is probably a better option.

Finally got to see this on DVD. It was very touching, sad, and heavy. You really don't want to watch this with people who like to chatter during films. It's rather contemplative so having a good setting and frame of mind for what you're about to see will help you enjoy it. I think it was a rather remarkable work and must recommend it. Not many movies will make you feel this way.

However, if you're not the least bit empathic or have a heart of stone then you might want to avoid this.

I had no problem with the score, it was pretty modest and understated. The acting was solid throughout and the young actor in the role of the son gave a nice performance as well. This was important, as the only main characters are him and the Son of Arathorn. The whole thing could have been ruined by mis-casting and I think they made a smart choice in picking this kid.

The tone was very good and it was pretty strong visually; the dead landscapes and ruination had a realism to it that helped to draw you in. Really the opposite of 2012, it isn't glossy, boisterous, and ridiculous. It's a hard tale and there is no glamor in it. It's a shame the studio buried this one.

Just saw it last night... the feel-good movie of the summer, no doubt. :oP

Seriously, though, it was well done. I haven't read the book, so I can't compare to that at all.

The book was a tough read as a new dad, might have to rent the movie if they've done this good a job of translating it to the screen.
