Yea, the season finale aired last week. Although a second season was ordered early on, who knows if it will happen since Andy Whitfield (aka Spartacus) is currently being treated for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

I heard they were doing a 6 ep prequel series while waiting for the actor to come back.

And yeah, from other sources I've heard just about the same stuff. Trashy as hell, not trying to be as artsy as Rome, but a fun, guilty pleasure nonetheless. It's on my to watch list.

(Actually, the number of things wrong with humanity demonstrated in this article is verging on the absurd...)

Further notes:

- Yes, the season is over. All 13 episodes are on Netflix instant watch now.
- I'm not really sure why people thought it started bad. It took a little setting up, and it doesn't get into the gladiator stuff until the second show, but the pilot was fine. I think it may be because the wannabe 300 comparisons were more egregious.
- I just watched the fifth episode, I think it's the best one yet. There's an awesome two-on-one gladiator fight and some surprisingly good character stuff with Crixus, Spartacus' main rival in the Ludus and the sex object for three different women in the show. We also learn more about the bad ass trainer in a very, very cool flashback where he explains his hideous scarring. Gore-wise, a man gets cut open and pushes his guts back in and there's a vicious decapitation.. It also had a much longer cock and balls scene, a brawl between nude men, tons of man ass, a penis candle, and men kissing if that's your thing.

It's a great show. I'm amazed it's never been discussed here before. You really can't get any more "AT". I've watched all of season 1 and it just keeps getting better. The main dude has cancer so I'm not sure what the future holds for season 2.

The great thing about it is that it combines abject trashiness with some really great writing and acting. It's what 300 should have been (which was abject trash through and through).

Well, I didn't want to offend a bunch of macho men who would come in punch me in the balls so I didn't just come out and say that the show is better than 300...but it is. The lower budget and complete lack of box office responsibility gives it an edge that 300 just didn't have. And the characters are actually WAY better, because they do more than holler slogans.

This show is so terrible but so FUCKING awesome. Thanks for turning me onto this guys. I agree with everything you've said--its trashiness and low budget actually makes it better as a 300 type show.

I feel so guilty, last week after a tough day a work I had a choice of watching an episode of Spartacus or Pacific and I decided to watch Spartacus.

It's impossible to defend. It's just garbage. But unlike most trash TV and movies, it acknowledges that it's pure exploitation and runs with it. No self-important, pretentious GLADIATOR crap. It just delivers the goods and it has a certain nastiness to it that's WAY more grindhouse than the movie with that title ever was.

Yeah, the episode in "the pit" basically completely won me over.

The pit was bad ass, and one of the episodes I reviewed in February . It reminded me of Conan the Barbarian when he was a pit fighter in the beginning of the movie. Cool stuff.
