Marwencol - Best Doc EVAH!!!

Holy holy holy shit! I caught this early this morning and it blew me the fuck away.

Here's the premise:

"Marwencol" is a documentary about the fantasy world of Mark Hogancamp.

After being beaten into a brain-damaging coma by five men outside a bar, Mark builds a 1/6th scale World War II-era town in his backyard. Mark populates the town he dubs "Marwencol" with dolls representing his friends and family and creates life-like photographs detailing the town's many relationships and dramas. Playing in the town and photographing the action helps Mark to recover his hand-eye coordination and deal with the psychic wounds of the attack.

I haven't teared up watching a doc in a long time. It's beautiful and heartbreaking.

I know eh? Really powerful and moving documentary. I love how his story-telling about the fictional Marwencol is a mix of fantasy and testimony about his real life. There's so much to talk about in this film.

Too true Neil.

The artistry and nuanced level of artistry of his photography is off the charts. It's highly nuanced and incredibly cinematic.

On many levels it reminds me a lot of the film "Synecdoche, New York" with Philip Seymour Hoffman. Especially at the end of the film.

I still have to figure out how to see this movie here in Belgium, it showed at a festival near Brussels, but it was too much hassle to go there for one movie only. I think I need to order the dvd one of these days. I read an article in the NYT about Marc and Marwencol and checked out the Marwencol website after that. I like the surreal stories and some of the photos are just incredible. Marwencol for the Oscar?

Schlupp, this would defintely be worth owning.

That pic you posted is a great example of Hogancamp's cinematic eye. Those are fucking action figures, yo!

Amazing!

I was channel surfing yesterday morning and stumbled upon this playing on my local PBS station. Fascinating stuff, and this guy's imagination and eye for detail is pretty intense. I just watched for about half an hour, but I think this is on Netflix instant watch now, so I'm gonna have to check out the whole thing.

Thanks for the recommendation. I added it to our Netflix streaming Q. Now I just have to wait to be in the mood for something "powerful and moving."

I just finished watching this and I'm floored. So many conflicting emotions. An incredible film about a really interesting human being. I hope Mark finds his happiness.
