Holy holy holy shit! I caught this early this morning and it blew me the fuck away.
Here's the premise:
"Marwencol" is a documentary about the fantasy world of Mark Hogancamp.
After being beaten into a brain-damaging coma by five men outside a bar, Mark builds a 1/6th scale World War II-era town in his backyard. Mark populates the town he dubs "Marwencol" with dolls representing his friends and family and creates life-like photographs detailing the town's many relationships and dramas. Playing in the town and photographing the action helps Mark to recover his hand-eye coordination and deal with the psychic wounds of the attack.
I haven't teared up watching a doc in a long time. It's beautiful and heartbreaking.
I know eh? Really powerful and moving documentary. I love how his story-telling about the fictional Marwencol is a mix of fantasy and testimony about his real life. There's so much to talk about in this film.
I still have to figure out how to see this movie here in Belgium, it showed at a festival near Brussels, but it was too much hassle to go there for one movie only. I think I need to order the dvd one of these days. I read an article in the NYT about Marc and Marwencol and checked out the Marwencol website after that. I like the surreal stories and some of the photos are just incredible. Marwencol for the Oscar?
I was channel surfing yesterday morning and stumbled upon this playing on my local PBS station. Fascinating stuff, and this guy's imagination and eye for detail is pretty intense. I just watched for about half an hour, but I think this is on Netflix instant watch now, so I'm gonna have to check out the whole thing.
I just finished watching this and I'm floored. So many conflicting emotions. An incredible film about a really interesting human being. I hope Mark finds his happiness.
