A good start to my day. was created by Dair
So my son isn’t really a gamer. He likes games and will play them, but he generally doesn’t initiate the gaming. That’s okay. I’ve learned in his eleven years that I have to let him be his own person. I would love for him to be more gung ho for games, but mostly for selfish reasons. I’ve learned to just request a game and let him decide what we play. I want to make sure he enjoys the gaming time we do get and just cross my fingers and hope that leads to more gaming.

He is currently on fall break and he is spending the day with his cousin at my grandmother’s house. As we were leaving the house this morning, I see he is carrying two board games with him. I didn’t recommend he take them, he just thought it would be fun. I know this is a small thing and I’m probably overanalyzing it, but damn it brought a smile to my face.

It's the little things =)

And it sounds like you have a good attitude about gaming with him - present, but not forcing. Thta's what I wanna do.

EDIT - Oh, and what games?

He had 1313 Dead End Drive and Break the Safe. His cousin likes 1313 and he loves Break the Safe. He likes LNoE, and a few other games I enjoy, but mostly more normal family games.

My son suddenly got re-excited about Ticket To Ride: Europe and I found him spending time to teach it to a friend. The friend had no interest so it went back up on the shelf.

I think a big part of growing as a parent is figuring out that your kid is going to have different interests from your own. I can talk all day and night about toy trains because my Dad had them all over the house while I was growing up, but I have no interest in pulling them out and setting them up.

I have one boy showing some interest in games (ones I don't care for by the way -- Warhammer 40k and Magic) and the other two only a passing glance now and again. That's just how it goes.

Nice to start the day with a smile.

The Spawn recently expressed a sudden interest in Magic:tG. A week later she came home one day with a deck of cards. This suprised me as her interest in games has been waning as she has grown older. A little twisting and prodding revealed that the high school boys play MtG at lunch. The Spawn is still in middle school, but the high school and middle school are in the same building. The deck was a gift from one of the high school boys. I took this opportunity to share the whole Alyssa Bereznak story with her. The Spawn's response was, "She's stupid. [pause] If I got invited to the high school formal, would you let me go."

Tonight she came home with a deck of M:tG cards from a different boy. Oh, man, I think I may have to get her her own cards before there's drama.
